Any benefit to acheiving Gold in multiple ways?
I currently have SPG Gold status through next year- I also have the SPG Amex, and am reasonably close to hitting the $30K spend that gives Gold status. I'm using a different credit card as my primary right now, but could divert enough spend to cross the 30K threshold this calendar year - I'm wondering if there is any benefit to doing so? Would the Gold from the Amex just be redundant with the gold I already have, or is there any chance it would extend my Gold status to a longer period or any other advantage? Thanks!

If it will matter, you might want to get Gold status with at least one method that makes it count as an elite year for lifetime status. This basically means if you already have three or four years of elite status that do count and are approaching 250 lifetime nights so that you can get lifetime status before the programs merge. We don't know what the criteria will be for lifetime status after the programs merge, but most folks seem to expect that previously earned lifetime status will be converted and honored, although there are no guarantees.

Benefits should be the same. There have been times when there have been SPG targeted promotions for Gold members who earned status through stays, nights, or spend on a co-branded credit card.
An example of such a promotion was a couple of years ago (2013-2014) when there was a targeted offer to SPG Gold for 25% Point discount on a point redemption for a stay at a property Cat 6 or lower. Gold members who obtained status by credit card (US version of American Express Platinum) without meeting any qualifying thresholds were not eligible for that.
Now with new ownership (Marriott), such promotions may or may not be forthcoming. Potential targeted promotions might show a difference between earned status vs automatic via credit card, but those don't happen regularly. With Marriott, it is difficult to predict if any such promotions will come again. If easily within range for spend on the credit card to earn status, any such future targeted promotions might make it worthwhile.
