Greedy SFO properties-Super Bowl Weekend

I followed hotel rates in the bay area for a few months before Super Bowl. While the downtown hotels continue to demand what I deem to be rip off rates, $900.00 plus for mediocre rooms, the airport Westin and others near San Jose tried to jump on that bandwagon and gouge as well.

I checked this evening and the rates are near normal. I hope the hotel owners find their properties 1/2 empty this weekend.

Enough already!

We've been experiencing very high occupancy events (conferences, etc) over the past few years where $700++ is the norm, even at the airport locations. They won't find them 1/2 empty (or 1/2 full). They've probably just started to release the 4 night minimums from some of them. I'd be surprised if any are at less than 95% occupancy.

I booked a random weekend to SFO (7k mi away) 6 months ago. Then Superbowl rates hit me so I booked a new ticket to go somewhere else.

I've also noticed the SFO property rates have dropped by a couple of hundred. This also applies for non-starwood hotels.

Why should a property charge less than the market rate. I don't hear anyone complaining when there is low occupancy and the hotels have to charge a pittance just to rent out a room.

Indeed. They'll charge what they think they can get. After all, a 100% full hotel is one that left money on the table.

This gives hotels the opportunity once in a while to charge that "silly maximum rate" posted on the doors.

That cursed supply and demand.....

I don't hear folks whining about how low rates are in the off season.

Maybe we should have some overarching organization that defines how much everyone can charge for everything. Hey, maybe the government. I wonder if anyone's ever tried that, and how it worked out.

If you found yourself with 10 -20 tickets to the game, would you sell them at face value or market value?

Another "Action News" posting. Nothing to see here kids......

Honestly, this happens at all major worldwide sporting events and is NOT solely related to starwood and it's brands.

Another condescending and repetitive post.

I, for one, am not a kid.

Your point was made, well enough, in previous posts above.
