ATTN: Sheraton in Puerto Vallarta closed to 12/31

gleff first posted this in the PVR Master Thread thread, but I thought I would bring this to its own for those who do not peruse regularly:

Due to Hurricane Kenna, The Sheraton Buganvilias Resort & Towers located in
Puerto Vallarta, Mexico will remain closed until December 31, 2002. The
hotel's public areas were affected, but the buildings did not sustain any
structural damage. Your reservation, confirmation # XXXXXXXXX, arriving on
12/XX/02 has been cancelled without penalty. Your cancellation number is
XXXXXXXXX. Please contact us at 1-800-782-9488 if you want to confirm a
reservation for an alternate location or date.
Some important websites for rebooking:

For stays after December 1:

Luckily, I booked the 70-something/night rate at the Westin.. for dates after Nov 30, I recommend looking into hotels downtown. Orbitz rates are pretty good - I'm paying $45/night for Playa Los Arcos. I'm sure it could be cheaper if, say, I used a local travel agent.. but that's still a good deal for any decent hotel.

The Sheraton Buganvilias now informs us that they will be closed until February 1, 2003.

We are contacting anyone that may have booked a reservation for January 2003 via whatever means available to us to advise guests of this new development.

ouch.

well, i was down there this past weekend. have to say, the westin didn't seem to get too much damage although there was tons of work being done on the property. but, i'm not sure if this was scheduled work in anticipation of the "busy" season (thanksgiving, xmas, new years, etc.) or hurricane related work.

the westin was really great and i posted a review on the PVR master thread.

i drove by the sheraton and it looked completely dark. good luck to all.

Lurker -- can you advise us about the specifics of what's going on at the Buganvilias? I mean three months is a L O N G time to be closed for repairs. I know this place took a beating on the exterior, but are in-room renovations occuring now as well? I was there 2 years ago and had a delightful time in a towers room; however, the room was your very basic Mexican motif --nothing special. Any chance they're taking this opportunity to work on some interior upgrades as well??

Sorry, I don't have any specifics, but I did get a first-hand accounting from a Federal judge in NYC who I've known for years. He was actually in residence when the storm hit.

When I told him the hotel would be operational on January 1st, he did everything he could to convince me otherwise. Apparently the damage was a lot worse than they originally expected. Who knows what they're finding as they go along? Not me, certainly.

You just never know what you will find from an initial assessment. The Hyatt by SFO "looked" ok after the 1989 earthquake (and the hotel was new) and indeed, it was ready to collapse and had to be essentially structurally rebuilt without tearing it down.

According to friends of ours who reside in Mexico, one cannot apply USA construction timeframes to Mexican contractors. Everything just takes longer in Mexico to get done. Hope that isn't too politically incorrect...

update from the Buganvilias hotel page on the SPG website:
Due to hurricane Kenna, the hotel will remain closed until April 30, 2003. The hotel's public areas were affected but the buildings did not sustain any structural damage. Please contact the hotel for further information.
I am planning on staying there the weekend of May 1-4, so I hope this date doesn't slip.

Now the website says closed through June 30th. Looks like I will not be using SW on this trip since the Westin is booked for the dates I want. Any advice on other hotels in Puerto Vallarta?

What are you looking for? Something 5/6 stars or are you willing to go to a 4 star? Do you want to be close to downtown, the Marina, Nueva Vallarta, or the southern part of the bay? How much do you want to spend?

The best information I have is that they will be closed through June 30th. If they anticipate opening earlier, it would be nice for them to let us know about it.
