Folks do the math. Do you think that these are "deals" even at these reduced rates? SPG has way overpriced these "specialty" properties.

Yeah it might be a good deal if you could combine with the gold/plat renewal gift but alas they won't let you do that.

I just dont understand why they feel its right to charge 60k plus for some of these properties. I mean hyatt at 22k per night for rooms in the same price range or higher. Or 33k hyatt points for suites over $1000 a night depending on the property.

Spg should cap redemptions at 35-40k max for the over $1k a night properties.
$1000 nightly rate/35,000 points=2.8 cents per point which is about right or fair.

Spg points are a lot harder to come by also! So unless your getting like a 1 million sw points per yr i cant imagine burning on these properties.

I for one am speechless. Had no idea that these properties were so outrageous now. Sure glad I got to stay at LM Bora Bora 4 yrs ago for free after the LM promo (7 stays at LM got you 4 free nights at any LM worldwide ^). I actually made a point of reaching SPG Platinum before that trip and scored an amazing upgrade at an OTW bungalow. I've never looked back and dumped Hilton and Marriott.

Promo T&C

Without wanting to sound cynical, I'm guessing the promo dates correspond to the date that these properties will change category, next year

To stem the questions regarding terms, everything you need to know, is below:

I think this is a great deal especially with the Fifth Night Free... Pushes the value of points over 3 cents in some instances (just comparing to the W Koh Samui)

they definitely are overpriced....i would never consider spending so much unless it was a really special occasion & even then i would not spend more than 30k a night max....90k or 60k a night is out of the question....

Well, I very much welcome this. Some of these are nice properties. They were clearly overpriced, but the W Koh Samui in particular now looks worthwhile for a punt.

35% off Top End Starwood Property Point redemptions

Credit goes to Milepoint

“We are excited to announce that seven of our most luxurious resorts can now be redeemed for 35% fewer Starpoints. From bookings made now until March 1, 2014, the seven resorts listed below will offer Free Night redemption for 35% less. Due to the type of rooms these resorts have, they must be redeemed by calling one of our SPG customer contact centers and cannot be booked online. The redemption savings are taken at the time of booking and no registration is required. Furthermore, our 5th Night Free benefit applies to these lower redemption rates. More information at complete terms are at spg.com/paradiseiscloser.”

W Retreat and Spa Maldives – Now 58,500 Starpoints a night (previous 90,000)
Le Meridien Bora Bora – Now 39,000 Starpoints a night (previous 60,000)
Mystique, Santorini Greece – Now 39,000 Starpoints a night (previous 60,000)
Al Maha, Dubai, UAE – Now 39,000 Starpoints a night (previous 60,000)
W Retreat Koh Samui, Thailand – Now 26,000 Starpoints a night (previous 40,000)
Pine Cliffs Residence, Portugal – Now 26,000 Starpoints a night (previous 40,000)
Vana Belle, Koh Samui, Thailand – Now 26,000 Starpoints a night (previous 40,000)
These discounted rates are combinable with Starwood’s 5th night free award redemption promotion, so to really maximize on this offer consider booking one of these for 5 nights.

If you can also utilise your Platinum or Gold renewal Gift of points discount it could be a very interesting redemption opportunity.

Agreed. Even with these discounts, the math here does not work out. It is better to wait and find a low rate - the redemption rate on your points here is not worth it. I appreciate the attempt by Starwood, but it just doesn't make sense.
