For those with questions regarding the best timing for applying for a Platinum or Gold status match, this is the policy to keep in mind for your individual determination:

Elite Expiration: The Elite Status Challenge entitles members to one full year of elite status, from one renewal period to the next (i.e. the end of February one year to the end of February the next year) and only carries over if they are upgraded on or after March 1st (whereas earning status naturally* gives members elite status for the remainder of the current year, carries over for the entirety of the following year, and expires at the end of February in the third year)

Elite Status Challenge Expiration Example: If a member is upgraded via the challenge on or before February 28th, 2017 they retain status until February 28th, 2018, the following year. If they are upgraded on or after March 1st, 2017 they retain status for the remainder of the year, all of 2018, up until February 28th, 2019.

Thank you.
So are you currently Marriott Platinum? If so, why did you do a SPG Platinum challenge?

As I plan to have many stays on SPG properties on these few months and SPG challenge gives the status till Feb 2020, I find it helpful. So, I do not need to worry on elite nights later of this year and how to allocate nights for Marriott/SPG.

I hope the program combines next year I do enjoy the benefit and hotel atmosphere in both program.

You should not have been signed up for the challenge since you were already effectively Platinum. I suspect (totally a guess here) that SPG will pull it once they realize what has happened. No one knows what the program will look like come next year so counting on particular benefits before the new program is announced may not be wise.

That's why I asked my question. At the very least, OP should not have matched his/her Marriott status to SPG during his/her SPG Platinum Challenge!

I think he explained why. I was addressing what they might expect to happen going forward. Granting the challenge was a mistake and I expect SPG to pull it once they realize what's happened.

I don't believe granting the challenge was a mistake as OP was not SPG Platinum at the time of the granting. Just because OP was Marriott Platinum at the time, how is SPG to know OP has a Marriott account if the accounts are not linked? That's why it was OP's mistake to link the accounts during the challenge. If OP had finished the challenge, been granted Platinum status within SPG and then linked the accounts, I believe OP would have been able to achieve his intended results of having Platinum status for a longer period of time.

I think the whole point of this challenge or status match is to push sales, encouraging a current or potential loyal customer to try their brand. It is not a risk/control program that needs to very strict on customers to avoid devalued behaviors.

I was not SPG platinum before ( as I could join the program) . That means I also never tried their brand.

I believe it is the win-win situation to extend existing customer base from their own customers when they join their business, rather than letting them to try/stict with other program. ( Which mean I might also dropped out a program to stict with Marriott/SPG, rather than Marriott/other program. Yes, I planned to drop other program.)

All in all, I just asked a simple question on the program rule which I believe SPG can be able to make decision based on current program condition. Nothing is about committing future.

However, you are SPG Platinum now since you've matched your current Marriott Platinum status. And that is a problem because SPG Platinums are unable to take the SPG Platinum Challenge. I'm afraid you may have shot yourself in the foot.

I agreed. I changed my mind later after joining the challenge. Doing 18 nights without knowing what benefit feel like, seem unreasonable. So, I went for status match and did enjoy the perks first.

I actually forgot about this challenge myself and found myself few nights less for the challenge. I just asked the question to see whether what SPG thinks. Then, I may find myself booking a few nights more.

You might try an email to the Lurkers [email protected] to make sure you get their attention. I wouldn't expect them to be scouring all the posts here.

Presumably, no. Since you can still link, get status match and transfer points until August. You’ll get a notification in August to combine your accounts into a single account with one number, one status and one points balance.

How about a challenge that includes the month of August? I've got enough stays lined up in June, July and August for the platinum challenge but come May, I'm curious whether I'll be able to select the June-August period.
Furthermore, I've been getting some contradicting infos: Can I apply for both Gold and Plat challenge in the same period (or one after another)? Will multiple paid rooms (no promos) count towards the challenge? The way I understand it is that multiple rooms on one reservation will be counted as eligible stays (at SPG locations) till the end of 2018 but does that apply to the challenge to (or did it ever?). Thanks

Highly unlikely as the new program would have started by then.

Not sure, but since the Gold benefits are marginal anyway, I would just do the Plat if I knew I would be able to make the 18 nights.

Yes, up to 3 per night, as long as it's your name on all reservations and all paid by you.
