For those with questions regarding the best timing for applying for a Platinum or Gold status match, this is the policy to keep in mind for your individual determination:
Elite Expiration: The Elite Status Challenge entitles members to one full year of elite status, from one renewal period to the next (i.e. the end of February one year to the end of February the next year) and only carries over if they are upgraded on or after March 1st (whereas earning status naturally* gives members elite status for the remainder of the current year, carries over for the entirety of the following year, and expires at the end of February in the third year)
Elite Status Challenge Expiration Example: If a member is upgraded via the challenge on or before February 28th, 2017 they retain status until February 28th, 2018, the following year. If they are upgraded on or after March 1st, 2017 they retain status for the remainder of the year, all of 2018, up until February 28th, 2019.

Question. I have a large number of nights coming up, the first of which is checking in on 23rd and checking out on the 25th. When I e-mail to register for the Challenge, should I make the start date the 23rd or the 25th? In other words, should I start the day my stay ends and the nights post, or do I need to start on the actual first night.

Sorry everyone if I am repeating something already said, but can my 90 period start mid month. I wanted to start my challenge with a start date of March 23, to conclude on June 22. But everything I'm reading makes me think a 90 period must begin on the first of a month and end on the last of the 3rd month. Can anyone clarify.

My impression is that the challenge can't start mid month, and you can only count nights if you're counting the entire month.

Plat challenge counts even retroactively!
I had no clue that SPG considers a request for a Plat Challenge even retroactively. Bingham Girl had clocked 18 nights YTD but she had not registered for a Plat Challenge. We decided to try our luck and wrote to platinum liasion. Voila! They decided to consider the period 1 Feb - 30 Apr and she had exactly 18 stays Instant Platinum! It posted in less than 24 hours too.
Now, only if 2 PlatMinus in the family could add up to a Plat :P

Platinum Challenge: Gold Status En Route Possible?
Hello,
This is my 1st ever posting, even though I have been reading actively for weeks.
I would like to ask if I can get my Gold status en route in meeting my Platinum Challenge, as the Platinum Challenge is now set at a high bar of 18 nights in 90 days, and I believe it might be possible hit 10 stays (Gold: 10 stays or 25 nights) along the way to achieve the 18 nights.
The customer service officer I spoke to, said that if I am given the Platinum Challenge, I am not allowed to get my Gold Status, even if I achieve the Gold criteria en route to meeting the Platinum Challenge. I felt this to be extremely strange to be denied Gold Status esp. when I qualified for it.
Could the Lurkers clarify on this?

I would find it highly irregular for someone who had 10 eligible stays credited to their account not to be upgraded to Gold once the 10th stay is applied to their account. That happens automatically and is totally separate from the Platinum status challenge arrangement.
Starwood Lurker, I signed up for the Plat challenge starting March 1, yesterday my final night posted. Today, I got an email from SPG telling me I completed my challenge. It did not say when my status would expire. Do you know what's the normal protocol for qualifying in late March? Do I get status for the entire 2013?
Thanks

Starwood Lurker,
When doing the Platinum Challenge, does your first day have to start at the beginning of a month, ie 3/1/12. I had a bunch of nights towards the end of March and wanted to start with 3/23/12. Is that even possible? Have you heard of any exceptions to this?

I just called SPG Gold desk and asked to be enrolled in the Platinum challenge. The rep asked me if I had Plat or Diamond status with any other chains, which I don't, and informed me that I'm not eligible for the challenge because of this. Perhaps, I'm confused, but I thought the challenge was open to all?

Send an email to [email protected] instead of calling the SPG Gold line.
