Upgrade question

I'm going from Shanghai to Las Vegas in early April and I'd like to buy an economy seat and sit in business class. Can I use my UA miles to upgrade roundtrip on ANY Star Alliance airline, or am I limited? I don't care where I would have to connect through (SFO, Vancouver, NRT, Seoul, etc.).

Thanks and sorry for what must be a basic question.

No. United Mileage Plus withdrew from the *A mileage upgrade program. If you want to upgrade with UA miles then you need to be flying UA (or LH trans-atlantic).

One option is PVG-NRT/PEK on *A and then NRT/PEK-LAX/SFO-LAS on United. Only United segments can be upgraded.
