upgrades on SAA

May soon be travelling IAD-JNB on a very cheap ticket (I don't know the fare basis, but it is low, low, low)

I'm *A gold (UAL Premier Exec).

What are my upgrade chances?

Well, given that UA no longer participates in the *A Upgrade program, I would say your only chance is if the flight is oversold in Y, there aren't any SA elites or other *G that paid higher fares, and you got op-uped to C. Therefore, slim to none I'm sad to say.

Even if they did, those were only available on high-fare tickets.

I would say "slim to none" is probably being optimistic.

Get to the airport really early and see if you can secure an exit row. I had the "luxury" of doing a 14 hour flight YVR-HKG on AC in coach but managed to get an aisle exit row. Combine that with some free booze and I slept almost the whole flight away.
