UA or SQ on NRT-SIN?

Planning *A RTW in F for October to celebrate my wife's retirement.
Current itinerary is ORD-NRT-SIN-CPT-JNB-ZRH-IST-MAD-FRA-DUB-ORD.

I have two choices for the NRT-SIN leg, UA853 and SQ997. I understand from other threads that SQ F is preferable to UA, but is it worth an extra 6 hour layover in Sningapore? And if so, can we do anything with 8 hours in Singapore?

Take SQ. Definitely. You could get a room at a nearby hotel for a nice rest, or take a free tour of Singapore. Also, Singapore is a lovely place to spend half a day just exploring..

I'd take the +6 hour layover in SIN and take SQ. ^

Also, even though you've been a member for almost a year, this is still your first post, sooo... Welcome to FT!

Since you've never been to Singapore, I would suggest perhaps to make a stopover a stay a night or two there. It is a lovely place...

Reasons why not to take SQ

1. You will find out how mediocre UA is and not want to fly them any more

2. Enjoy food and eat more than you should

3. Likely to fall in love with someone who lives half way round the World

4. Be in trouble with wife for looking at others

I am just sitting in the SQ lounge in SIN waiting for my flight to FRA> I was travelling on an A RTW. Was sing UA for NRT-HKG. It was the worst flight in F so far. The new ANA F is very nice, same for the new TG F. I would try to avoid Asiana and UA in any case. Also avoid 777-F on SQ. It is 2-2-2, old seats. Only the 747 is nice. Avoid old style TG and old style ANA.
SIN is nice for a day or two, even for a few hours. The airport is close to the city (Taxi less than 10 USD - 15-30 min - there is also a subway system which should be even faster).

Definitely take SQ, preferably on a B747. Go into the city, you have plenty of time to do some sightseeing and Singapore is beautiful. Leave most of your carry-on luggage at Left Luggage.

The subway (MRT) is cheap and convenient, but it will take quite a bit longer than a taxi to get into town. It's not an express train and you have to change trains at least once.

Having said that, I would also suggest that the OP take SQ, and enjoy a visit to Singapore.

I would definitely take SQ997. Note that SQ995 which leaves a little earlier is via BKK and regional first class not the skysuites (which SQ997 has).

SIN-CPT is 2-class so no first. I think that's the only longhaul flight on your itinerary without first class?

According to GCM you have 29,628 miles which is just over the limit for FRWSTAR1. Either cut 630 miles out or you can add more than 4000 miles.

Sounds like a great idea. Any problem getting in and out of Sinagpore airport - customs, security, etc ?

Had several itineraries where I stayed within the FRSTAR1 milage limit, but thought the additional flexibility might be worth it. I am hoping that SAA will resolve their issues with *A RTWs So I could expand my South Africa leg. Thanks for the help

Should not be a problem at all. Getting in and out of SIN is a breeze. As I assume you are American, you won't need a visa.

Yes, NH flies NRT-SIN as well, but it's only 2-class service. Thus, no F.
