Checking luggage for multi-segment on two separate tickets
Hi!
I'am planning a trip to singapore in oct/nov this year. Cos I have heard alot of good things about SIA from alot of ppl ;-)
So i thought i would try it out this time, but to keep the cost down i thinking about buying the trip from Göteborg/Jönköping, Sweden to Singapore on two separate tickets from two different agents/airlines.
One tickets for the segment Göteborg/Jönköping - Paris/London via copenhagen with SAS. And one ticket for the segment Paris/London<->Singapore with SIA.
The stopover time in Paris or London will be 1-2hours.
My questions is simple, will SAS be able checkin my luggage at Jönköping/Gothenburg the whole way to Singapore even if i have one tickets for Jönköping/Gothenburg->Copenhagen->Paris/London and other tickets for Paris->Singapore?
Or must i take out my luggage at Paris and then checkin it again with SIA?
Both SIA and SAS are members of Star Alliance and it is only 3 flights so technical they should be able to checking in the luggage the whole way to Singapore and back to Göteborg/Jönköping but will they refuse todo so cos i bought my trip on two separate tickets?
Kind regards

It's certainly possible, however, some agents are incompetent and/or lazy and might just tell you they can't do it. But with a little effort, luggage interlining is possible, even between airlines that belong to different alliances (like AF and LH).

Agree with flysurfer. Should not be any problem at all. If you run into a problem ask for a supervisor.
Make sure to tell SQ in Paris about the luggage. If they don't enter the tag numbers your bags will very likely left behind (securoty resons)
And also keep in mind: when you travel on different tickets and your first flights is delayed you are on your own changing the onward flights. Could become expensive if SQ does not allow you to change the date of the flight. Check with them.

Welcome to FT, tomeck!
You may want to check the SAS forum here at FT (use the search function once you get there) as similar things have been discussed before.
Personally I don't think it should be much of a problem as long as you stick to one alliance (which you do in this case) and also have a decent transfer time in LHR/CDG (both to convince the check-in agent it's doable and in case they refuse through check and you need to recheck-in).
I would guess the chance of success is higher if you fly out of GOT as they may be more used to these 'unusual matters' than smaller airports like JKG.
Also if you have status with for example SAS (EBS or EBG) it may certainly help a bit.

From personal Experience, SAS is less likely to do that. Their fancy check-in system doesn't seem to have that provision. The supervisor was not helpful. So, i suggest checking it in advance with SAS.
I had this experiece when flying SAS to the US and connecting to UA and then to a NW flight. the NW flight in a different booking, but interlinked with the other sectors in a way that it was visible in the booking system. And I Didn't have any trouble on my way back. Was going to a place where the only service was from NW.
I never had trouble with Lufthansa on exactly the same routing, but SK in ARN refused to check the bags through because the NW was on a different PNR. Let us know what eventually happens.

Also at CDG Air France uses T2 while SIA uses T1 and it's a pain connecting between the two terminals as they are very far from eachother and personally I have not been overly impressed by the efficiency at that airport.
Just make sure you have 1.5-2 hours between the flights at LHR or CDG so you have enough time to reclaim and recheck the luggage if they refuse to throughcheck it.
At LHR both SAS and SIA fly from T3 and at CDG they both fly from T1 so walking distances will be fairly short from baggage reclaim to check-in and as long as the incoming flight is not delayed you should make it with plenty of marginal.

As far as two airlines have baggage interline agreements, they should be able to interline bags. The only time i was not able to do was with SAS.
In fact, once at AMS, the check-in agent even asked if i was connecting to another destination on a separte ticket - she would check thru my bags.
Just check with SAS / AF or whoever you want to fly.
BTW, to correct my earlier posting - with LH, i was flying out of FRA, not ARN.
thanks

According to BMI's new business strategy a lot of their short haul routes won't allow interlining of bags from other carriers or even their own!
