I took advantage of the paid upgrade from Y to Y+ at EWR in September. When these are being offered, does anyone know how difficult it might be to get a point upgrade (10,000 points) from Y to Y+? The flight I was on was full in Y+ so I assumed a lot of people did the paid upgrade.
My husband and I will be flying EWR/CPH on Dec. 16 (connecting from MCO) and I'm hoping to upgrade us to Y+ with points. But do the paid upgrades usually exhaust the available Y+ seats? Since we are connecting and will not be checking in at EWR where you normally request and pay for these upgrades, will it be possible to pay for one at the gate? Susan |
Is it possable to upgrade E+ - C on UA metal with LH code, using M&M points?
If "yes" whose milage applies, UA or LH? Shofar |

SWU on LH Segment of UA Itinerary
Ok, I know you can use a SWU to upgrade a UA flight. And I know you can use a SWU to upgrade a LH flight, provided you plan ahead for a paper cert or are willing to waitlist on the day of departure.
But say you have an itinery like IAD-FRA(UA), FRA-CDG(LH). You submit your e-SWU, the upgrade clears (Y to C) for the UA leg, and your seats are assigned (upper deck, yay!). The UA agent tells me that's it, you're done, the SWU doesn't cover any LH legs. But I've heard hints and innuendo here on FT that the person checking me in on the day of departure can waitlist me for an upgrade on the LH leg - as an extension of the original (single) SWU. Anyone have any experience with this? Now, I know intra-Europe on LH it's the same ole' seat, etc, just hoping for a better snack box... ;) |
In the Lufthansa section in the original posts, there is this reference to United Airlines SWUs for upgrading on LH:

Just FYI, the valid booking classes have changed. W fares are no longer upgradable with an SWU, unfortunately. This link to United's SWU rules now reads: 1a. Lufthansa Standby: This upgrade may be used on a standby basis, subject to availability, on the day of travel on any eligible Lufthansa flight following in accordance with the terms and conditions of this certificate, except when booked in LH booking classes X, I, O, R, N, W and E. Please note: This upgrade requires a 14-day advanced notification to Mileage Plus in order to print and mail the certificate for presentation to Lufthansa on the day of departure. Slight, but important, change in terms. Very useful thread, thanks! |
Thanks, OP updated. Also added some more info on NZ change in premium cabins.

Does that mean S (and L and T on European flights) class is still upgradeable with a SWU, as LH miles do not work there? |
Does anyone have any info on the new *A carriers, Blue1, Adria and Croatia?

Lufthansa won't upgrade me. Please help.
For Christmas my father's friend gave me two upgrade paper certificates. He's done this for the last couple of years, because he knows I love to travel to exotic places, and he's a 1K United flyer and can't possibly use all his upgrades.
The upgrades are printed out on regular United ticket card stock, and have no reference to, nor any additional terms on the front or reverse sides. They simply state: "Upgrade Certificate, Customer Coupon, CPR Confirmed Systemwide Upgrade. This certificate may be used to confirm a one-way/one-cabin upgrade based on capacity-controlled seating for eligible booking classes on a flight operated by United or Lufthansa. Valid booking classes in Region 1 - CDYBEMUHQVWSTKL Valid booking classes in Region 2 - CDVBEMHUHQVW Certificate is transferable however void if bought or sold. Expires one year from issue date: 28 Mar 04 Profile code: PMO Profile Name: UG-System" Having read these certificates, I booked a United flight to Dubai, UAE. My ticket is a United economy class "W" ticket. I am a United Mileage Plus Premiere Silver member. When I called to upgrade I was told that my flights are "operated by" Lufthansa and are therefore only upgradeable as standby upgrades at the aiprort on the day of departure. I told them that my certificate says it is good for a confirmed upgrade on a flight "operated by United or LUFTHANSA." They told me that there was nothing they could do, because the profile code says I cannot be upgraded. I spoke to the folks at Lufthansa and they said the same thing. My feeling is that: A.) I booked a United ticket for this exact reason. There was no disclosure until after I booked the ticket that it was operated by Lufthansa, and that B.) My certificates clearly indicate that they can be used on either United or Lufthansa flights for a confirmed upgrade. I'd be fine with a standby upgrade, but somehow I'm sure they will tell me at the Lufthansa desk that they do not upgrade from the W booking class, even though my certificate clearly states that my ticket is upgradeable. Also waiting for a standby upgrade adds so much stress to flying, that I'd really like to try to avoid it. I really feel that their failure to honor this coupon is fairly fraudulent. I bought their ticket specifically because it fit the rules outlined in the coupon, and now they claim to have secret, completely undisclosed rules regarding this upgrade. Is there anything I can do short of taking United and Lufthansa to small claims court to try to force them to honor their own certificate? Any help, suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ed |
I agree with you that the wording on the certificate reads as though you can confirm upgrades on Lufthansa, but unfortunately the wording could be clearer. United is not the best when it comes to terms and conditions. :(

Have you tried buying up to the first available upgradeable class? Admittedly, you would still be on standby at the gate, but if you choose traditionally light flights you may be in luck. I've upgraded three of us twice using this strategy. The other alternative is to rebook on United metal in one of the booking classes you mention above. I feel your pain, but Lufthansa are well within their rights to deny you the upgrade based on your booking class. |
