Star Alliance and One World on the Same Ticket?

I wasn't sure if this should be in the OW forum or the *A forum.

I recently learned that I could buy a ticket on AA 001 stock to fly on AA metal from the US to Europe, and then transfer to a segment on the same AA ticket on Star Alliance member Croatia Airlines to fly into Croatia.

Is it unusual to be able to buy a AA or UA ticket and then fly on a partner airline in the opposite alliance? Are there other examples of this occurring with other OW and *A partner airlines?

Not at all unusual, UA sells CX segments for intra-Asia connections etc. etc. Not all alliances have coverage in every corner of the world and airlines then look for off-alliance partners to cover these. Not always an ideal situation, while bags get checked through on single tickets, crediting segments to different alliances, lounge access etc. is sometimes not straightforward

Thanks for the information.

Yes, lounge access is not straightforward. Even though I have an American Airlines ticket and the appropriate status, I will not be able to go into the lounge departing a European city because my AA ticket has me on a Star Alliance airline!

I find it relatively straightforward. Lounge access at a given airport will depend on the airline on which you're departing. If you're not departing on a OW carrier you won't have OW lounge access.

Both BA (OW) and SK (ST) use AC (*A) for onward domestic connections in Canada.

No issues with lounges, though there can be inconvenient terminal changes.

Not unusual at all and relatively smooth "sailing". I sometimes travel to Singapore from Beirut taking ME to DXB (ST) and then SQ to SIN (SA) without any problems.

LH sells CX
UA sells QF
(just to name a few samples)

SQ and SK do still have some close cooperations even after SK left Star Alliance.

LH with LATAM and Gol into South America.

SQ uses DL to (de)feed in the US

NZ has a partnership with CX, which includes reciprocal lounge access on routes between Auckland (AKL) and Hong Kong (HKG) and some frequent flyer benefits.

NZ also has a partnership with QF that covers domestic routes within both Australia and New Zealand. This includes some frequent flyer benefits across both networks.
