Differences in redemption miles?

A while back a friend used 90K miles and got a free RT biz ticket on *. About a month before this I had to burn 90K miles to get an upgrade on SQ from economy to biz, while a free economy ticket would have cost me the same 90K on SQ. It seems to me that SQ has very high redemption thresholds, but I couldn't find any sites/information about redeeming miles on the * network. Anyone know anything about this as I would rather use my miles for a free biz trip than having to pay for economy and using the same miles for an upgrade. Thanks.

numbers of miles or points needed for upgrades and/or awards differ from FrequentFlier program to FrequentFlier program.

Example: I personally value (in average) 3 miles&more miles (LH) = 2 MileagePlus miles (UA).
