Spanair to join *A. Chapter-I: The fleet
Spanair was founded just 10 years ago from the necessity of SAS to have a low cost carrier to bring the north europe tourists to Mallorca, so at the begining was a charter company (and right now still ave a lot of charter flights) to bring people to the balearic islands.
After the Spanish law of open skies, was SAS the first to intruduce the first non spanish local flight (from Barcelona to Madrid), and shifted soon to Spanair to start the competition agains Iberia.
At that moment all the planes were from SAS, and all of them were MD-8x.
Now the situation has improve a little bit, the majority of the planes are MD-8x but they are shifting to A-32x, but most of them are in the longer routes like Madrid to Canary Island or Madrid to Barcelona (if you don't fly to Madrid or from Madrid is quite difficult you can take one of the new planes).
A few years ago Spanair created a new company called AeBal (using B-717) to flight between islands and some cities in mainland (Bilbao and the omnipresent Madrid), but in this moments of crisis they use to flight anywhere.
Right now the owners of Spanair are SAS, Marsans (a spanish travel agency) and Lufthansa. Marsans also own Aerolineas Argentinas.
The MD-8X
---------
Basically in a configuration of 3-2 with a the Business class (here called Avant class) between 3 to 10 rows. Most of them are build in 1988-1990. The flight range arrives to any place in europe, usally at landing are quite funny with the last hundreds of meters (depending of the pilot).
The A-32x
---------
Quite new and still recieving (till 2005) more planes, basically all of them are using on "good" routes and flight to Europe (teh few destinations they do).
The configuration is 3-3.
The B-717
---------
They have 4 planes and are the smaller ones and the configuration is 3-2. If you flight to the balearic islands the chances to take one of this planes are quite high, specially if oyu flight to the small ones (Ibiza & Menorca).
Note: I'm not working in Spanair and I don't have any comercial or persoal interests on this company. Sorry for my english.
