Is STAR a separate entity?
Does the Star Alliance operate as its own entity -- with separate filing status, employees, etc.? If so, where are its offices? ... Or does each partner airline have a "Star Alliance" department that gets together with Star Alliance departments at the other partner airlines?

Based on the shabby integration of ticketing and reservations, I think it is safe to assume that the marketing departments don't talk to one another very often.. =) Even something as simple as lounge access is inconsistent with many lounge agents just realising what the Star Alliance is!
