Gaps in the * system
Even with 3 more airlines joining, there are still significant gaps in the * system. Africa, China, Nordic countries and Australia hopefully will be addressed.
I noticed a post talking about a joint * airline serving Australia. That's an interesting idea.
What about Africa? Who are the biggest players there? Is South African Airway interested in joining * Alliance?
Likewise for China and the Nordics.

It's likely that Air China will join Star Alliance. LH already codeshares with Air China - the whole process until Air China joins may take a long time, too.
Recently J. Weber and other representatives of LH said that they see no necessity to get a member in South Africa. But they said also some months ago that Star wouldn't accept many new members anymore. And now Asiana/LOT/Spanair will join.
SAA may be very glad about their independant position with codeshares to many airlines.
IMO, India is a big market that may be worth for any alliance.

Maybe i`m incorrect, but i think more members - more ways to go
when LOT will join *A i will have 3 * airlines fling out of KBP(Kiev, my home city) I`m only not sure that a needs SpanAir because it does`t have any longhaul destanations... very strange LOT have at least WAW-NYC, ORD and Toronto and hopefully IAD in near future
Surely i`m understand that SAS taking his daughter to the long trip to Spain airline #1
