My favourite (international) *Alliance carriers for economy class flights (in order):
1.AN - I am still mouring the loss of this great airline. Their C class service from SYD to KIX was devine.
2.NZ - comparable to Ansett, inclduing their excellent domestic and Trans-Tasman service.
3.SQ - nothing surprising, just consistently good. Usually score an exit row seat as a Krisflyer Gold.
4.TG - my first international flight ever (BNE-BKK) and still one of my favourites.
5. NH - new 747 service to LHR is good.
6. UA - E Plus seating is quite nice.
7. SK - two bad flights six years ago on the 767 NRT>CPH route in the space of four days. I may giver them another chance with the new Airbus service.
Have also flown Biz class on LH long haul and enjoyed the sevice.

All in the back of the bus, in order of quality:
SQ (by *far* the nicest of the bunch)
SK (E+)
AC
CO (metal cutlery!)
BD (shorthaul)
LX (shorthaul)
LH (shorthaul)
LO (shorthaul)
UA (omg I can't describe how awful they were. one hot meal on an 11-hour flight?! And I didn't know they *made* screens so small.)
Still haven't tried SN, OZ, NZ, US, or any Asian carriers.

Only 9 to original posting date (now up to 12 as of August 2011), in order from best to worst by cabin:
Business Class:
1) NZ
2) OZ, SQ, TG - too close to call between these on my few flights
3) LX
4) UA (new product)
5) LH
6) US (yes, they call it first class, but it isn't!)
7) MS
8) TK (intra-Europe)
Economy:
1) AC
2) NZ (trans-Tasman)
3) LX, CO, UA (not counting UA E+)
4) US
5) MS
I have now added LH (in C), TK (in C), and LX (both Y and C) to the above.
