Question of one stop check in

I will be travelling MAD-LHR-IAD-LAX soon. MAD-LHR is on BD. The rest on UA. Will BD in MAD process all my boardind cards? If so, how will they handle my UA SWU's?

I am almost certain, because of your upgrade, that BD will say they are unable to issue your bp and you will have to get it at LHR off UA, who will then grab your SWU. Do let us know what happens.

Upgraded sectors seem to cause a problem for Star carriers issuing eachother's bp's - or it may just be as simple that BD doesn't want to have to deal with the UA SWU (etc)

Richard, I have no prob using the swu (after all, UA gave it to me in the first place). My only question really is, will I have to check in again?

I can check in at the gate or RCC I suppose.

hmm I wasn't suggesting that you had a problem using the SWU

Depends what you mean by "check in" - in MAD they should check your bag(s) all the way through to your final destination(LAX) but they won't be able to issue your UA sector boarding pass. You'll have to get those when you go through the flight connection/transit desk place at LHR.

Well that's my guess anyway. This is what I recently had to do in HKG after flying AN from MEL and SYD. I too was using a SWU and AN could not issue my bp for HKG-DEL-LHR in MEL, and I got it at HKG where they took the SWU.

Thanks for the info! I am really looking forward to the trip. My outbound should be fun:

LAX-YVR (AC Y)
YVR-FRA (LH F)
FRA-AMS (LH J)
AMS-MAN (SQ J)
MAN-LHR-MAD (BD J)

BD in MAD is completely hopeless. I had a BD/SQ flight from MAD-LHR-SIN in C and F in January, and could not get the LHR-SIN pass issued in MAD. I told the agent that I was under the impression that *A could provide seamless travel, or did they not belong to the Alliance ?. They said that they could not answer this question, and I should check in London !

You are going to have to go via the Flight Connection Centre at LHR anyway. There are check-in desks there to get you your onward boarding passes. If it is too busy may go to the RCC to checkin.

Hmm, should depend on the station. Had no problems with UA in MSY. They issued my LH boarding passes for my upgraded sectors without a problem (no need to collect any vouchers as LH upgrades are mostly electronic). On the other hand, UA RDU couldn't issue my UA boarding passes IAD-LHR because they were upgraded with LH miles and they didn't now how to do it. It was easily done by UA IAD but then again they said they couldn't issue my onward BP on LH... which was a non-upgraded sector...
