Does this mean we can accrue UA status mile on Singapore starting July 1? That would be great.

the status miles are not promissed yet. But we may hope. With Ansett and Air New Zealand, who joined StarAlliance only by end of march-99 - miles started to count as status miles too already on jan-1-99. (But UA's information on that was - and is - still very poor. We had to find out ourselves trough comparisaons with LH's informations and than asking UA).

And if (when) those staus miles start to count, how low will they be in coach? 50%? 25%?

Rudi assures me that the intra-europe LH flights earn a minimum 500 status miles. But non-atlatic flights only get 50% miles in coach. Same problem on TG.

Unless UA does something about this parity problem, there will exist within star a two-class preference system FROM THE US PERSPECTIVE (emphasis added for merry): The non-discounters UA-AC-SAS-etc vs. the point discounters LH,TG,etc.

Bottom line: potentially more connections through Copenhagen than through Frankfurt...

Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer members earn only 50% on all coach fares on all airlines in their programme. It depends on United if they want to offer something similar.

But LH Miles and More members get full points on SIA flights. So maybe UA might follow suit.

Matt: the minimum with LH is 500 (and that covers most of the western europe distances from FRA or DUS or MUC). For some times already (for now more than 12 months) the minimum has been raised to 1'000 (for european LH flights) - and as yesterdays email from LH confirms, there is no end of that bonus in sight yet

Sehr geehrter Herr Martel,

vielen Dank fuer Ihre E-Mail.

Die 1000 Minusmeilen in Eco. sind noch unbefristet.

Wir hoffen, Ihnen mit diesen Infos geholfen zu haben.

Mit freundlichem Gruß

I just notice that LH made a mistake in the above email-reply: they wrote "Minusmeilen" (negative miles) instead of "Minimummeilen" (minimum miles).

but you may feel even more discriminated: the above 1'000 (endless) promotion is only valid with LH's miles&more-account (not with UA's mileage-plus).

(but on the other end: LH's miles&more program doesn't have any promotions for flying UA, as you have when you use UA's mileage-plus-program, with the permanent exception of 500 minimum miles for flying UA-Shuttle).

SQ recently started giving economy class flyers 70% of the mileage flown as DL Sky Miles. I do not know if it will be the same for UA and the Star Alliance. One other SQ rule that may affect some of you: when flying SQ, you must be a resident of North America to earn miles on DL,AA,UA; a resident of Europe to get LH,Scandinavian and Qualiflyer miles etc. etc.
Also, I presume this UA/SQ alliance will signal the end of the AA/SQ code-shares. AA did buy seats on SQ from LAX to Singapore whilst SQ brought seats on AA from LAX to DFW.
