Tracking baggage

Is there a way with Star Alliance (United and Lufthansa in particular) to track the location of your bag. My wife and daughter are sitting in IAD for an 8 hour layover before leaving for Munich. She is worried that her bag may be sitting somewhere off the beaten path waiting out this long layover and may not make it onboard their flight.

Anyway to be proactive and track the checked bag locations with either United or Lufthansa?

Premerger UA used to have such a system and there were even kiosks in the bag area. The best it could tell you was the airport last scanned. Presently believe you can only do this if you have reported the bag delayed, Baggage tracing

Believe airport agents can do this, but unless you have a good reason, I would avoid asking.

Any UA airport employee can look it up but it will say the last scan which would be IAD. Are you trying to locate it within inches via Gps?

I think they just want to make sure LH got it and it's on the plane.

AFAIK, no way to ever confirm this (apart from GPS/tracers, which is an issue in checked luggage).

For future reference, several bags come with trackers. Tumi has a nice line of then. My father uses it all the time.

Cool feature, I've never heard of this.

Thanks for the input, I didn't figure you could. I just thought I had read Delta did something like this. Not trying to GPS locate, they were just worried they had such a long layover that it would be set aside and slip through the cracks come loading time.

Delta does have a "track my bags" function on their mobile app. I've never used it so I have no idea how much information it provides.

As for long layovers, I recently had a 12 hour one and my bag made it just fine.
