I think Virgin Atlantic joining would be a negative for flyers. LHR is already well served by *A members, VS has no short haul network to contribute, and it would reduce competitive pressure on airfares.

Also, would VX be a package deal with VS? That'd be weird at SFO where there's a great deal of competition.

Nope...the two are separate airlines and VX isn't likely joining an alliance anytime soon.

I would not be so sure. Singapore Airlines just bought 10 % of Virgin Australia:

Singapore Airlines-Virgin Australia Deal: Defending the Kangaroo
Article
DEAL JOURNAL AUSTRALIA HOME PAGE

By Isabella Steger

Singapore Airlines Ltd.s decision to buy a 10% stake in Virgin Australia Holdings Ltd. Tuesday is a smart move at protecting its prized Kangaroo route, analysts say.

According to Bank of America Merrill Lynch, the Kangaroo route, which flies the day-long journey between Europe and Australia, accounts for around one-third of Singapore flag carrier SIAs passenger revenue. That route, however, has come under intense competition lately, since Qantas Airways Ltd. announced a 10-year alliance with Dubais Emirates Airline in September.

Singapore Airlines has had a 49% stake in Virgin Atlantic for 12 years, and it hasn't joined *Alliance yet either.

WY - Oman Air would be great! Small enough not to be intimidating, but has one of the best C and F products! They just would need to add a USA gateway!

They really need to add N. America and Europe and bigger planes.

Garuda is getting its act together, but I think Star Alliance really needs a Middle East Airline.

Tell that to LH. At this point, Star needs to pick up one of the smaller regional carriers, but none seem particularly good/financially stable.

No need for the alliance to be totally U.S.-centric. WY already flies to a handful of European destinations, including Star hubs FRA, MUC, and ZRH. Plus BKK eastward. (Though it would be nice if they got rid of their special fares for which only Omanis national are eligible.)
