Great *A redemption
There are some real gems when we use the stopover. The following is all in C.
Air China (I know not the greatest but my only option) hgk-pek only A320s servicing this route. This is a 3 hour flight, thus liveable.
Air China pek-pvg
Thai Air pvg-bkk (22 hour layover)-hgk
I went over the MPM according to the agent. However, I thought I was well within for a south asia to north asia award.
Well turns out she allowed it and I thought ok she finally realized it. Then she tells me it will be 35k miles. I said, are you sure I think it is 45k. She insists and I have went back to look and it seems it should be 45k for south asia to north asia. Anyway I got the eticket emailed to me and for $35 and 35k miles I'm going to sure enjoy this award. It feels great to maximize.

UA redemption? Yeah, the South Asia-North Asia one is fun.
I rather liked getting a stopover in BKK on HKG-SIN-DPS-BKK-HKG on an intra-South Asia CO award.
From what I can tell of the rules here, this should be a legal award:
HKG-SIN(stop)-CGK//DPS-BKK//HKT-BKK-HKG
Two open jaws (where a cheap LCC flight to get you to your destination should be easy), one stopover. 35K in C. Nice.

UA doesn't charge for flight changes on awards, so it might be worth a look if the widebody operated flights fit your schedule.

I keep tinkering with this one. I was able to get a connection in BKK on both the outbound and inbound. I think this totally blew the MPM but I didn't ask any questions as if you don't like what you hear call back.
I got a great UA agent who worked with me and it took 45 minutes but it was well worth it.
Upgraded the trip to First and it looks like this:
hkg-bkk on Thai F 747
20 hour layover
bkk-pek on Thai F 747
pek-sha on Air China F 777
pvg-bkk on Thai C 330 (no 3 cabin on this route)
19 hour layover
bkk-hkg on Thai F 747
For some reason they still only took out 60k for a south asia to south asia F award. I think it might be something in their system that in since my first connection is in BKK they default to that perhaps as this is the 3rd time I have reworked this and every time they always go with sa to sa.
Only 5k difference really. Taxes $37.30. I'm very happy.

Just a FYI- CA has 4 A332's in a "regional" configuration that more or less have the same product as the A320's. It's possible you might end up on one of these- though they do occasionally use the International birds on short haul routes too.
