*A N.A. to S.Africa- can you route throug S. America

*A N.A. to S.Africa- can you route throug S. America
For a star alliance award from US to S. Africa are you allowed to route through S. America. ie. Continental or UA to Sao Paulo/ Buenos Aires and then SAA to Johannesburg from the above, on one award as you can via Europe or do they charge you 2 separate rewards via S. America.

Although some airlines do refer to 'star alliance award' tickets, it's really a bit of a misnomer because each FFP makes its own rules for what is / is not allowed on a redemption. You'll probably get better advice if you ask in the forum dedicated to the programme where you will be spending your miles or points to buy the award (presumably UA or CO, from your mini-bio).

For what its worth, IAH-GRU-JNB is a valid routing per the *A website
Whether you can book it as a single award depends on your FFP
