This is true and I was surprised the other day to see that they've already posted reward inventory for that route. I almost booked an upgrade with a SWU on the CAI-EWR return in late May. There was not any straight miles reward seats available when I checked, but there were upgrade rewards (R bucket).

It really depends on how long out you want to book this.

Assuming you have the required *A miles, you can do LAX-FRA and then FRA-CAI, all in international F.

There is a 7+ hour layover in FRA. I am sure you could get LH to do an assisted transfer and your father would have access to the LH F terminal in FRA.
