FlyerTalk Forums Expert How-Tos and Guides
Last edit by: jtet
A number of threads have been started with members asking for guidance on which mileage programme they should join. In order to help users I have started this thread to allow people to post their requests for information here and to allow people to offer assistance.

For members asking for information please help people to assist you, can you provide:

(1) What is your home airport? (SFO, LAX, MCO, etc.)
(2) What types of fares do you usually buy ? (C, F, Y, etc.)
(3) How many miles do you usually fly each year? (<25K, 25k-50k, >50k)
(4) Do you have any kind of status at present? What is it? (UA Silver, M&M Senator etc)
(5) What is most important to you in a FFP? (Frequent upgrades on travel, priority services when flying the airline, good award redemption rates, free lounge access, etc.)
(6) Which routes do you fly most often (US Domestic, Transpacific etc)
(7) Preferred Airlines
(8) Do you travel for work or pleasure? (Can you chooose your airlines, class of service?)

GENERAL INFORMATION:

If you fly less than 50k miles per year: it is almost guaranteed that your choice will be between Aegean Airlines, Turkish Airlines, and Asiana Airlines. Please look up these airlines' frequent flier programs, and make a decision as to which best suits your needs.

Some considerations to take into account:

Airlines tend to treat members of their own frequent flier program better than members of other frequent flier programs. If you fly one of these airlines, it is recommended that you choose that airline.

Some airlines have better earning/redemption charts for your pattern. For example, if you fly on cheap fares on a certain airline often, Turkish might give you miles for it, while Aegean might not. However, Turkish Airlines might charge much more for the redemption that you want to make than Aegean.

Asiana Airlines offers lifetime Star Alliance Gold for 500k miles over life. The other 2 airlines do not offer this benefit.

Asiana Airlines has a credit card in the USA and some other countries. If you are interested in credit cards, check to make sure that the program that you join has a credit card in your country.
If you still aren't sure which frequent flyer program is for you after looking these up, feel free to ask on this thread.

Do you know why your friend is so interested in *A status, living in SYD and doing most of his flying on a route which is essentially a OW hegemony with CX/BA/QF and soon MH? (actually this is probably not even true anymore with the rise of the Gulf carriers) I can't really think of any *A programme being great for those flying habits, except perhaps LH for the 200% mileage accrual on C fares. He could get PPS on SQ, but if he buys C all the time he wouldn't even really get any benefits except for maybe the PPS phone #.

(1) What is your home airport? JFK/DEL
(2) What types of fares do you usually buy? C
(3) How many miles do you usually fly each year? 40K
(4) Do you have any kind of status at present? What is it? M&M SEN
(5) What is most important to you in a FFP? Maintaining *G Status, and then earn-burn ratio
(6) Which routes do you fly most often Transatlantic
(7) Preferred Airlines LX

Hi All,

I've been a LH SEN for the past five years, but may need to change FFPs because of a reduction in travel. I typically fly 30-35K miles long-haul on LX in C, and about 5-10K domestically in the States or India in Y. Most important is maintaining *G, and then earn-burn, upgrades and all. I've been looking at OZ, A3 and TK (though by no means am restricting myself to these three), but OZ's earn-burn is more than a little subpar. Any thoughts/suggestions?

(1) What is your home airport? Normally OOL but for the next year HAN
(2) What types of fares do you usually buy? C and F
(3) How many miles do you usually fly each year? 30 - 40K
(4) Do you have any kind of status at present? What is it? Been status matched on TK to *G have SQ cardboard
(5) What is most important to you in a FFP? Maintaining *G Status, and then earn-burn ratio
(6) Which routes do you fly most often? Asia/Pacific, domestic Australian
(7) Preferred Airlines? DJ, QF, SQ and lately VN (not really preferred).

My dilemma is the fares out of VN are best on TG, which can either credit to SQ or TK. The SQ tie up with DJ also advantages me.

Not sure if I should credit *A to TK to maintain status or SQ to use on DJ?

For members asking for information please help people to assist you, can you provide:

(1) What is your home airport? EWR is best for me; LGA is good also. JFK in a pinch
(2) What types of fares do you usually buy ? Y, always
(3) How many miles do you usually fly each year? about 30k
(4) Do you have any kind of status at present? What is it? (UA Premier, M&M Senator etc) I am going to hit UA silver later in the year, but nothing as of yet
(5) What is most important to you in a FFP? (Frequent upgrades on travel, priority services when flying the airline, good award redemption rates, free lounge access, etc.) upgrades and ability to book E+; club access would also be nice, but I have the Club Card which I would cancel if I got *G
(6) Which routes do you fly most often (US Domestic, Transpacific etc) mostly domestic; by far my most common route is NYC-PHX
(7) Preferred Airlines I like UA more than US; No other legacy has nonstop to PHX
(8) Do you travel for work or pleasure? (Can you chooose your airlines, class of service?) mostly work; I choose my own tickets, but I can only buy Y

Thanks!

(1) What is your home airport? CGN/FRA
(2) What types of fares do you usually buy ? Y
(3) How many miles do you usually fly each year? (25k-50k)
(4) Do you have any kind of status at present? What is it? (OZ Diamond, UA no status, but still have 14k miles sitting in my account)
(5) What is most important to you in a FFP? (free lounge access, frequent upgrades on travel, priority services when flying the airline, good award redemption rates in that order)
(6) Which routes do you fly most often (mostly FRA-ICN, occasionally CGN-PDX, the odd regional flight mostly in Asia)
(7) Preferred Airlines (OZ, LH, SQ)
(8) Do you travel for work or pleasure? (both, I can pick my airlines, but I need economy fares, I travel on Y or B class tickets on business trips, lowest class I can find that will still accrue miles for leisure)

I joined Asiana Club as it was the easiest way to get *G I knew about, because I like flying with OZ, and because my most frequent route is FRA-ICN. I started with their FFP about a year ago and just reached Diamond. I've been reading all about their terrible earn/burn rate all over the OZ board though. I find it particularly vexing how hard it is to earn full miles on an LH economy ticket, so now I'm wondering what would be the more suitable option for me:

- just stick with OZ for most of my travel and credit the odd LH miles somewhere else
- continue to use my OZ to maintain *G and stash all additional miles somewhere else
- switch to A3 and stash all miles above *G somewhere else (was completely unaware of their program before today, seems almost too good to be true)

Then I also have a related question. I currently have a little over 14k miles with UA as I used to travel to the US a lot more. However, as I'm based in Germany it would be much easier to earn and spend additional miles next to flights with M&M (esp. CC). Would you recommend sticking with UA or switching to LH for me for an account to just stash extra miles in and save up for award travel? Thanks a lot for your advice!

Hi all. I've been trying to figure out whether to change frequent flyer programs for the last couple of years, since I moved to Canada full-time, and have been having a hard time making heads or tails of all the competing programs I could consider.

Here's my information:

(1) What is your home airport? YVR, sometimes SEA for leisure flights if a big price difference
(2) What types of fares do you usually buy ? My company is well-known for cost-consciousness, and we have to fly economy / cheapest non-stop, unless outside North America. Looking at recent itineraries, I've been on W, S, T, V, U, M; probably S & T the most.
(3) How many miles do you usually fly each year? >50k (just over 50k)
(4) Do you have any kind of status at present? What is it? UA Premier Gold
(5) What is most important to you in a FFP? In order of importance: Upgrades, priority services, free lounge access, ability to redeem awards
(6) Which routes do you fly most often YVR-YYZ (Canada domestic); YVR-MUC; YVR-LGA or BOS; YVR-DAY
(7) Preferred Airlines Lufthansa, Air Canada. I avoid USAir like the plague after bad experiences.
(8) Do you travel for work or pleasure? Mostly work (YVR-YYZ, YVR-YOW, YVR-PHL), but I don't get to choose my class of service. I have some choice of airline although for domestic Canada, basically my only choice is to finagle the corporate system to avoid WestJet. My flights to the US are a mix of work and pleasure, and my flights to Germany are pleasure (although work for my spouse).

As you can see, my main problem over the past few years is that I'm on UA's program, but doing the majority of my flights within Canada. *Gold gets me almost nothing through AC except lounge access, which I often can't even use (lounge is closed before morning flights). I would prefer upgrades as most of my flights are long, but can't get them with UA status on AC economy tickets. However, Aeroplan's benefits don't seem great, so I'm reluctant to switch. I looked at M&M, as well, but also the benefits don't seem as good as UA and I'd have the same AC upgrade problem.

Any thoughts?

(1) What is your home airport? SIN
(2) What types of fares do you usually buy ? Not sure, cheapest normally but get some work trips also (Not business)
(3) How many miles do you usually fly each year? >50K
(4) Do you have any kind of status at present? What is it? No
(5) What is most important to you in a FFP? Redemption award rates
(6) Which routes do you fly most often APC international
(7) Preferred Airlines - Singapore, Emirates
(8) Do you travel for work or pleasure? Both

Hi, looking for some advice on what would be best for me. In krisflyer just now, not sure they're the best bang for my buck however in terms of award points & redemption.

My wife and I travel a lot with our family (2 kids) - usually at least one long haul per year (Often more) and a few short hauls, cheapest ticket for personal (Not looking to necessarily be on a specific alliance program) plus 2-3 trips per year with work (Normally economy or premium economy).

She has also just got a new job, hq in US and will be flying business from Singapore to US once a year plus several regional trips on business per year. Want one that'll work best for us as a family unit to claim a big trip when we have the points (SHe's aussie, I'm British so usually one of those destinations at a peak period - xmas for example).

Lounge access would be nice, but only if we could all do it, not essential.

Thanks

SQ kris flyer does not care about you unless you are PPS elite...

UA probably is ur best bet... Apart from some discount SQ fares earning 0% on UA vs 50% on SQKF..

OK, I'll look into them. In terms of flights, I'd still prefer SQ but use UA programme - would that make sense do you think (Excepting cases where I'd get no points)?

Actually, one thing I forgot to mention is I have a Amex platinum card, which gets me pretty good miles on Krisflyer. Not sure I'd be able to get something equivalent in Singapore for United.

(1) What is your home airport? TRD
(2) What types of fares do you usually buy? Y, and SAS Youth/Last Minute Youth tickets
(3) How many miles do you usually fly each year? Not sure, varies.
(4) Do you have any kind of status at present? What is it? N/A
(5) What is most important to you in a FFP? Slowly reaching and then maintaining *G. Once reached, to spend points on free holidays.
(6) Which routes do you fly most often? European flights, typically TRD-CPH-LHR, TRD-CPH-AGP, TRD-(CPH-)FRA (I generally try to reduce connections via OSL, since domestic flights earn me no points or segments.
(7) Preferred Airlines? SK.

I suppose the answer is EuroBonus, but I'd appreciate some input regardless. I should add that I'm a student, and I'll be starting my MSc fall 2013, and it'll be either in UK or Germany.

Cheers.

it really depends on your spending. a typical SIN-US C class on SQ metal costs 80k on SQKF and 60k on UAMP. That's 25% saving.

you can work out your amex pt transfer rates from http://www.webflyer.com/programs/mileage_converter/ to see which one suits you better.

sorry to repost my question, but I'd really appreciate any input I could get on this. My main FFP is Asiana, but there are so many booking classes on other *A flights that don't earn any miles, that I will probably need a second account to just stash miles for eventual redemption on. I currently have United, but wanted to know whether there is a better option.

Here are the answers to the questions:

The options I am currently contemplating:

- just stick with OZ for most of my travel and credit the odd LH miles somewhere else
- continue to use my OZ to maintain *G and stash all additional miles somewhere else
- switch to A3 and stash all miles above *G somewhere else (was completely unaware of their program before today, seems almost too good to be true)

Once again sorry to repost and thanks in advance for any suggestions!

(1) What is your home airport? SIN
(2) What types of fares do you usually buy? Economy/Discounted Economy
(3) How many miles do you usually fly each year? <25
(4) Do you have any kind of status at present? What is it? No status, just joined Krisflyer
(5) What is most important to you in a FFP? Redemptions
(6) Which routes do you fly most often? Within Asia-Pacific
(7) Preferred Airlines (OZ, LH, SQ) Recently started flying SQ
(8) Do you travel for work or pleasure? Leisure only

I'm really a traveling newbie, usually book through online travel agencies/budget airlines for the cheapest deals. Recently started to fly SQ as I'm looking for an FFP to go long term. I usually fly 2-4 times a year for leisure and within Asia-Pacific mostly. Any recommendations for FFP as a long term thing?
