*A Upgrade Question

I'm looking to travel to FCO in September. I want to purchase an economy seat and upgrade with Amex MR to business for me and my wife. When I search for most economy fare it gives me the discounted fare class. How would I go about getting an upgrade from that fare to business or is there a better method to this madness? I have 125k Amex MR miles as well as Plat ability to borrow another 60k if needed. Thanks in advance for the help.

In order to upgrade you will either need to buy a CO ticket and upgrade using CO points plus cash or you will need to buy a B fare on any *A airline and then pay CO points for the upgrade. The points requirement is higher for the *A upgrade versus the CO upgrade and the points are per-segment rather than per itinerary. Another advantage of going with the straight CO reward is that you can wait-list the reward so you won't have to stalk the inventory.

The bad news is that CO is running their 767s into FCO this summer and those aren't the best Biz product across the pond. By far.
