Uber Portugal / USA ATT smartphone

Lisbon 9 days, Coimbra 2 days, Porto 3 days (train);
all hotels have free Internet;
ATT wants $40 for month of phone-limited data;
seems like that cancels once-twice daily Uber vs. taxi savings...?

newbie at this internationally, how do others save via Uber
without spending for smartphone Internet...?
Find a Starbucks? Or? Thanks.

I have Sprint which has free (slow/2G) international data to a big list of countries. I used it for Uber in Lisbon and it was sufficient. Backup plan is my work phone which has roaming as well.

You'll almost always be within range of wifi. It's likely you'll be leaving from your hotel (which has wifi) and being picked up again somewhere that has wifi (e.g., restaurant). Airports at LIS and OPO had wifi, too, so we were able to request uber from the airports.

Just get a local SIM. It's pretty cheap in Portugal. there is a Vodaphone store right in the airport. I got one when I was there over Xmas. More info here.

> Just get a local SIM.

Just called ATT.
They are allowing unlocking of my LG Flex
so ATT SIM card can be taken out & local
SIM card inserted. Just how cheap is
Portugal SIM card -- I assume varied plans...?
(SIM card newbie, tips appreciated)

Depends on how much data you want. The airport has a vodafone shop in arrivals, and a few other retailers. Vodafone Total - 18€ gets you 3 gigs of 4G traffic + 500 min/sms to use locally (good for one month). If 1GB is enough, 13.49€ is the price.
I use a competitor, NOS, with similar rates and a similar price.

If the Vodafone shop at arrivals is busy (they often are when long haul flights arrive), try their shop up in the departures. If even that is busy, just around from the Vodafone departures shop is a Correios (Post office) and just outside the Correios is a MEO (a Vodafone competitor) vending machine that sells SIM cards for similar prices. The MEO vending machine operates 24h a day, the Vodafone shops I think are 8am-10pm.

Vodafone

I'm currently in Lisbon. I buy the "Up Total" sim from Vodafone. 9.90 Euro. 3gb of data and some amount of minutes and sms I don't care about. Uber is great here but be warned that if you are staying in certain access controlled areas (e.g. Bairro Alto), not all drivers can get in through the hydraulic barriers.

ETA: been here since January. Same approach.

Vodafone. Also, it may have been 9.90 rather than 9.99 FWIW
