Beware Lines for Passport Control (between lounge and gates) at Lisbon (LIS)

On UA65 right now by a stroke of luck.
Thought I would leave the lounge 30 min before departure time.....big mistake

Passport control line approx 60 min long and only TAP agents were originally available allowing TAP customers only to bypass line for departing flights...

Finally after 20 min a UA agent came to allow UA customers to bypass the line for the imminently departing flight.

This may be summer time travel in Europe, but I haven't seen anything close to this.....

That is what it boils down to. I was told something about a strike, but I have not seen anything official.

If you had missed your flight, you would have had very little recourse since UA's requirement is that you need to be at the gate at T-30. Even if the walk from the lounge and passport control had taken just a couple of minutes, they could (strictly going by the rules) have offloaded you.

Sorry but who leaves a lounge that is not already beyond passport control only 30 minutes before a flight? As noted, even if there was no line at passport control or secondary security, you could have been considered a no-show. Indeed, the fact that you made your flight should not be considered an indictment of LIS security practices (I see 60 minute nonpreferred lines at CDG T1 all of the time).

UA would have applied flat tire rule and rebooked OP on next available UA flight. Especially since he's a 1K.

Why is the lounge at LIS outside passport control?? That is terrible design.

Yes, it's bad, but not rare either. It was only about it year and a half ago that Delta moved its SFO lounge from before security to after security. I've seen lounges before security in Europe, too.

Lisbon's lounge is apparently between security and passport control. I think the OP's heart is in the right place to warn people about that.

The only available *A lounge is in the Schengen area. Travelers to non-Schengen destinations have to go through passport control when leaving Schengen. That's not unique to LIS.

Yeah he acknowledged the mistake in the OP. No need for us to pile on there!

As this is generic to all airlines and not just UA, will move this to the Spain/Portugal/Gibraltar forum.

LIS passport control is routinely bad in peak times in the summer. Usually the lines are worse on inbound passport control than on the outbound passport control. Do give yourself 20 mins to go through it as it can get backed up when all the South- and North-America-bound flights leave mid-morning.

Good news!!! As of today, US citizens (and citizens of 8 more countries) can start using the automated passport gates at LIS.
