Basic Fare Using Points. Any downsides?

It actually makes travel fund less valuable since as soon as I use it the best case it's good for a year, while points are for now valid forever...
I'm not sure about international tax but I ask to have the $5.60 security fee refunded to my credit card every time I rebook a basic fare.
