Explanation I got was pricing changes all the time and seats at the lower price must have been fully paid by someone else as I was entering in my name/credit card information... no offer to adjust the price.
Thanks! I'm glad to know that I'm not crazy and that others have seen discrepancies. I just ended up cancelling the original flight and rebooking at the lower fare without an issue.
