Perry said part of the problem might have to do with the way Southwest stores and loads drinks on planes. Unlike other airlines, he said, Southwest does not stock perishables on board and rarely uses air-conditioned catering trucks

Several Southwest Airlines flight attendants have reportedly been injured this summer by exploding cans of carbonated beverages. It’s happening as the nation experiences a summer of extreme heat, including in some Southwest hubs like Phoenix and Las Vegas.

20+ years ago, I delivered and stocked soft drinks for a summer. Cans and bottles explode when dropped. I saw a 2 liter fall and take off like a rocket breaking a ceiling tile. The bottle had been sitting in an air conditioned store before falling. Slamming a case of cans could cause the bottoms to bulge.

My favorite story on this topic occurred 40 years ago on a Continental DC-10. On takeoff a drink cart dislodged itself and a single can fell out and got punctured. It rolled straight down the aisle, spraying passengers all the way to the back of the plane.
