I don’t think it’s limited by aircraft type. I changed today’s segment run which was not booked on a max8. The change was free. The phone agent was able to confirm a 25 minute connection to my return flight, and I completed the run in 3 hours gate to gate to gate.

This is great. I had a flight booked BWI-SAN cause it was $400 cheaper than DCA-SAN but it’ll be way easier getting to DCA than BWI. Neither flights were scheduled on a MAX

It is system wide, whatever flight you change to, you will be prompted again with the same message, except you cannot really make change after first flight change.

This also is not limited to max7, you can make change for free even if your original ticket has no max 7 on it.

No one has a ticket with a max7 as Southwest nor any airline in the world currently flies the max7.

Person at gate counter with me at SMF was changing from a destination of PDX to LAX. Agent said “usually there is an upcharge, but not now.” Neither the PDX or LAX flights are on a MAX.

Astonishing.

Free changes for everyone, up to an arbitrary date, no announcement.

Just, crazy.

Now changes are "under maintenance". Looks like it was a bug.

App says: "Resource ChangeGroup is turned off""

A-List Preferred phone line says: .... (dead silence, no music or banter on hold, for an unprecedented 15 minutes running).

Southwest is experiencing its typical sort of crash this afternoon.

Edited to add: The outage lasted about 30 minutes. It's fixed now.

I don't see this in the Android app. My upcoming flights aren't scheduled to be on MAX8 planes though.

Really? When I go to the website, I see a message that changes are not working online and you have to call:

Changing through the android app works for me at least up to the confirmation screen. I didn't confirm, was just messing around to test it out. For reference, my flights are scheduled to be on 700s.

I called in for a different matter and I asked about the change waiver while I had the rep on the phone. She openly said it's in response to concerns pax have about the MAX8.

Just checked all my flights, none are currently 737-MAX

Smart move by WN. Because if people are really scared they will just cancel and maybe rebook elsewhere.

In that scenario, Southwest already has their money.

Yes, and the passengers presumably can use it on a future itinerary that doesn't include the MAX. But the existing itinerary may go to another carrier (e.g. United) that competes on similar routing.
