I wonder if enough passengers collectively outside of the west coast/California still fly Southwest into Hawaii via a connection, and return on another carrier, creating an effect, that pricing of seats on those on those eastbound return flights (on other carriers) end up more expensive than the westbound into Hawaii.

Interesting, I guess we'll see. (From a very unscientific overview, it did seem like the westbound into Hawaii flights sold out more quickly than eastbound returns, but that might partly be the nature of the sale).

It's not the first time WN has a destination not accessible from all points in its network - if traveling from points far north or west in the US, there are some Caribbean and Central American locations that can't be booked unless you do a multi-city itinerary or build in your own overnight.

I'm not sure how motivated WN will be in the short term to allow red-eye flights. Given that I'm guessing there's going to be enough demand from the west coast (and perhaps rockies and western midwest) for a while to fill up WN's planes to Hawaii. I also wonder how much demand there would be from the east coast to fly WN to Hawaii. I love Southwest a lot, but anything more than a ~5 hr transcontinental flight on a WN plane is starting to ask a lot of me... So I wonder if WN figures it's going to be harder to make a dent in the East Coast --> California --> Hawaii market, since that'll basically be at least 2 transcon flights, a lot of people might prefer paying for a direct flight, or for airlines that provide extra legroom seats/meals/first class seats.

HNL Airplanes

Does anyone know if the airplane will have entertainment at each seat or chargers for devices?

Answers to a few things asked:
LIH will be announced at a later date. No idea when.

Snack bag for food with wheat thins, pretzels, cheese spread, fruit snacks, and tic tacs. Milano cookies, pineapple orange juice. Special coconut spiced rum and Kona Longboard Lager to be available for purchase.

Taxes- The $9.30 amount mentioned belongs in the US Transportation tax column. Points bookings should only have the $5.60 each way. Ask Customer Relations to investigate it for you if you had to pay.

5 hours is a long flight in those cramped WN seats but the price is right. Can I be the first to say I absolutely love the flight schedule?!
One thing I hate about the legacy carriers is that they have too many redeye flights heading eastbound from Hawaii. This homey doesn't do redeye anymore for anything except TATL or TPAC (a horrible way to end a relaxing vacation). So kudos to WN for not falling in that trap.

They are using the same aircraft that are on their existing network, which do not have seatback entertainment or plug-in power. They do have free movies, live tv, and on demand tv via wifi on board.

If the live tv service is received from Dish Network satellites, the coverage footprint will end about 100 miles west of OAK/SJC. Hopefully the movies and demand tv are stored on the airplane.

Agree 100%. Not even a drop in the bucket. Remember that Aloha folded a few years ago, and I doubt the competition has fully replaced all that capacity. Airlines come and go. Now United ceasing service - that would be a BIG deal.

Interesting. If you look on this page in the fine print at the bottom of the 2nd grey box, it suggests that the on demand stuff is still usable outside of the coverage area. Perhaps they just haven't updated it to include Hawaii on the list of places that are out of the coverage area.

Looks like someone shook the ticket trees in DAL and a whole lot of WGA fares just fell out. If you missed cheap seats on Monday, they're back! ^

Looks like they've just loaded many more seats -- but at what I would suspect are their regular, day-to-day prices. Around $250 O/W. Sale's over folks!

You means the seats that are roomier than ANY other economy seat going to Hawaii already???

I'll take WN with 32" pitch and 17.8" width any day over the other economy options.

The width is fake. A320 seats are wider. The pitch advantage is real,at least on the 737-800, which does have the best Economy non-Plus seat of any major US carrier.
