Would WN Sell to Warren Buffett?

Even an all-star airline industry stock picker/analyst has to create new buzz. Would prefer seeing the source piece on this than the linked articles. "LUV seems like the most logical candidate," is the takeaway. Buffett's company already has 8% of Southwest.

According to Wolfe Research senior analyst Hunter Keay in a Friday note to investors, most analysts appear to be focusing on Southwest and Delta “as the most likely two candidates, which seem like logical choices due to cash flow, balance sheet, brand reputation, and general overall quality.” Keay wrote that Southwest “has the characteristics of a typical” Berkshire Hathaway acquisition candidate..."

I have been following this Hunter guy’s recommendations and predictions about WN and his questions during the quarterly earnings calls for years.

Not particularly impressed.

Now that LUV stock is down 20%+ YTD, much more likely Buffett might grab it up. P/E below 9 now.

Then buy HA at a P/E below 5.5 and merge them.

The short answer is yes they would. The board has to entertain any offer that benefits the shareholders and that's the key.

Somewhat related, I think:

Southwest Airlines Returns Value To Shareholders ? Southwest Airlines

WN raises dividend and initiates new $2,000,000,000 share repurchase plan.

Buffett has often commented on how he loves companies that repurchase stock if it appears undervalued.

And since the headline was non-descriptive and no information in the post - here is what the link takes you to:

Lets remember why analysts and and CNBC exist, to get people buying and selling, often the same stock over and over, thus generating commissions and fees...

A publicly traded company essentially puts itself up for sale everyday. Warren Buffett does not need WN's permission!

Looks like Berkshire now owns 9.87% of WN.

In general, because of certain regulations, Buffett likes to stay below 10% ownership, unless he buys the whole company.

In the latest quarter, Berkshire actually sold stocks when individual company buybacks would have pushed its holdings over 10%. And WN is buying back stock, something like 6% of its capitalization under the current $2B program announced in May.

Hmmm

Google 'poison pill'.

WN is very heavily institutionally-owned. https://www.nasdaq.com/symbol/luv/ownership-summary

Didn't say it would be cheap! And they all have their price and fiduciary duty pressures to accept a good deal or premium to current market value. Been burned twice this way!
