Earned Companion Pass Can They Take Away??

I made 2 purchases in October 2017 at Costco. It helped me towards my 60,000 bonus on each of 2 cards. In January I got the Companion Pass for all of 2018 and 2019. The price of what I bought went down $800, so I’m eligible for $400 back on each card. Without that major purchase I’m not even close to the required amount. If they credit each of my accounts now (4 months later) am I going to lose the Companion Pass? Thanks

They won’t claw it back, but don’t make a habit of it.

If you're concerned, why not have the refund back to a different Visa card or a Costco Gift Card?

Just buy $400 worth of other items and it will appear on the same statement and cancel itself out. No issue.

That is standard practice in the US. Refunds are made to the original form of payment only. Tax, fraud, and money-laundering concerns.

I'm pretty sure they'll give you a costco gift card in lieu of a credit to the original card, I do it all the time.

Yeah, I’d just buy $800 of other stuff, then do the refunds.

Costco refunds are done at the main desk, new purchases are done at the checkouts. However it is true that they would effectively cancel each other out on the monthly statement.

Credit card companies require refunds be made back to the card account used to make the purchase. Unless Costco has negotiated something different (which is possible given their recent change to Visa), they are in violation of the credit card merchant agreement if they issue card purchase refunds any other way.

To a different card would be a violation. To give store credit (which is Costco gift card) likely wouldn't. Going negative for 800 points won't bring the Chase police out but if you have no intentions of using WN card again, it might be a good idea to spend or buy $800 worth of Costco cards.

BTW, anyone with a Discover, they are doing 5% back this quarter up to $1,500. A pita to remember and track for $75 back but I bought Costco (or Bjs) card online and confirmed that qualifies.

This is new to me, Costco has price protection on purchases made 4 months ago with a Chase Southwest Visa card ?

Who is giving this refund, Chase or Costco or are you simply returning the item and going to purchase it again at the new lower price ?

Costco give cash back on returns paid by gift card and gives you the choice of a credit back to the credit card or a gift card for returns that were paid by credit card.

If the companion pass is worth more to you than the refund, just don't seek the refund. I've never had a company come after me insisting that I take a refund for a price drop.

OMG I forgot that Costco.com takes Discover. Thank you!

I think this question bears repeating. Costco only 'price matches' within 30 days and with the receipt.
