I'm fairly certain I've seen this question asked before, but can't remember the answer and now can't seem to find it. If you have an idea in the plethora of Chase CP threads where to find it, help a brother out. Or if it makes sense to answer again here, I welcome it:

I currently have the SWRR Premier card, but want to try for the CP 18/19. Is it better to close Premier first, then open both together? Or should I keep it open, apply for the Plus, then close, then apply for Premier later? Or is there some other sequence that I should follow?

TIA.

The number Chase gave me to call was 1-800-243-6010 (not the recon line) and that's where I got the information about what's the delay in being approved. However, they told me that it might take up to 2 weeks *sighs* for them approve me on the card. I faxed the IRS document already and even sent it via email to [email protected]

I wanted to apply for both the business and one of the SW personal card so I can get one inquiry in my credit report. However, I am not sure what should be my next move? I can call back tomorrow to check again just like the specialist said. But then again I only have until 10/1... or 10/4 to apply for the personal card before the bonus expires. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.
UPDATE: I called back today and was told that the business card application was approved. Additionally, I applied for the SW Premier Card on Sunday and was instantly approved. Now I can start meeting the minimum spend for the companion pass 🤙

Thanks for the feedback to those that responded to my posting.

Data Point. Hi, I got the SW Plus card. Applied end of Sept. Received card Oct. 5th. Sent SM to Chase and was told I had until Jan. 20th to meet minimum spend. Thanks to all who posted on the strategy for getting the CP. The SW Business is still at 60000. I will apply when I drop back to 4/24 in about 2 weeks. I hope the SW Business will still be at 60000.

Data point + questions:

Looking for a tiny bit of clarification (confirmation?). I've done the Companion Pass once before in 2014 and didn't quite get the timing right (qualified 10/14 which gave me 14 months of it). This time I *think* I will get it right.

I applied for the SW RR Visa (personal) a bit earlier than I had meant to b/c I didn't want to risk the 60k offer disappearing on me. This time around I'm NOT applying for the Business Card as well.

I was approved somewhere around mid September 2017 (unbenknownst to me). So upon receipt of the card a few weeks later I emailed Chase customer service to see my last eligible spend date. Here is their reply with my name removed.

Thank you for contacting Chase about the spend for the
sign up bonus on your Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards®
Plus card and I'll be glad to assist you.

We reviewed your credit card account and confirmed that
the offer you inquired about is to earn 60,000 bonus
points after you spend $2,000 in purchases in the first 3
months your account is open.

[my name], the spend timeframe starts from the date the
account is opened. The last date to meet spend as per 115
days is January 08, 2018.

Your eligible purchases do not include balance transfers,
cash advances, and cash-like charges such as traveler's
checks, foreign currency, and money orders, any checks
that access your account, overdraft advances, interest,
unauthorized or fraudulent charges, or fees of any kind,
including an annual fee if applicable.

We appreciate your business and thank you for being a
Chase customer.

Thank you,

My statement date is the 14th (10/14 tomorrow is my first statement date).
From what I understand in reading this thread and many other threads (thank you to all from a mostly lurker) AND based on the email I have excerpted from Chase:

1.) As long as I clear the 2k spend AFTER 12/14 (but before 1/8/17) I should get the 60k point bonus after my 1/14/18 statement closes. If so as of the second or third week of 1/2018 I'll have 60k in points (plus the spend that posts) for 2018. I assume this part is correct (or is there a catch so that I should try to spend the $ on like 12/31 -1/1/18 at midnight?). I obviously don't want the 60k to post in December of 2017...Doing the spend on 1/1/18 is risky if it takes up to a week for the spend to 'post..' Conundrum...

2.) Since my qualification will be based on a large amount of (non manufactured!) spend in January of 2018 I assume that if I complete another 50k in POSTED spend by my 1/14/18 statement closing date I'll have hit my 110k threshold and will then be eligible for the CP by 2/2018 - 12/2019. Worst case my large total 50k spend is completed a bit late and my CP starts after the 2/14/18 statement closing date. Still pretty darn good if that is the case.

I haven't cut it this close with any other CC offers so I'm a little nervous about screwing this up. It 'sounds' like the 115 days is correct (my sec msg says so) but are there other data points to match (I saw at least one other in this thread)? And are there known instances of 'backdating' the bonus to the prior month even if the 2k in spend happens after the statement closing date (ie my 60k reward counting towards 2017 CP qualification b/c I cross the threshold in 12/17 even though it shows up on my 1/14/18 statement?

Sorry for the long post - I do appreciate the help or any guidance. I messed up the Citi TY rewards back in the heydey a bit by not seeking advice here first (I still did well - but not incredibly well like others here!). I truly appreciate all of your help (and hopefully my data point is useful re the 115 days).

thx!

You must have one big credit limit to be able to spend $50,000 in a couple weeks on one card.

IMO You would be much better off getting a 2nd Southwest card ( 60K bus or 40K personal )and putting that 50K ( 40K if you get a personal card) on a card that earns better, INK, etc

Your plan sounds good although I plan on doing all my spend starting 12/31/2017

thx for the quick reply!
I could try for the business card - I did that last time but they asked me a lot of questions as to the nature of my business (sole proprietorship etc). It all went through fine but i guess it makes me a little nervous since I don't want red flags or AA (I'll need a mortgage in a 6-12 months and my lengthy credit history is currently sterling with no black marks).

It's a 35k limit (even I was surprised). I'll need to cycle 25k through it twice in that timeframe which is part of why the timing matters (ie first 25k can happen in latter december, next 25k in early january).

I totally agree that the 50k on another card is a better option.
Hmmm. More to chew on. The risk of random AA/red flag is holding me back from applying for the business card. I also don't know if I'm approaching 5/24 - it's possible but unlikely...

as always much appreciated

There is also a second personal card @ 40K which you would then need to spend $8K on to get CP

What is AA ?

Do you have any Chase business cards open ? I keep my Ink because I then have a business relationship with Chase and have no problem getting other Chase Business cards

I have done this in the distant past. Even then the banks didn't like it. They consider the credit limit as the most they want to risk. When you pay it down and charge it up again they are at additional risk in case your payment gets reversed a few weeks later. In short, spending more than your credit limit in one cycle automatically raises a fraud alert. That carries a small risk of having all your Chase accounts closed. I recommend that you give up a month of CP and spend the rest after the January statement date.

Oh - that's really good to know - I had no idea. I just assumed that if it was posted as paid they would be fine with it. Yes a month is def not worth the risk.

AA = adverse action (like getting all your cards shut down!)

thanks all!
