Unused travel funds x2

I recently booked a Southwest flight partly using travel funds and a few days later noticed price went down. I then made a reservation change resulting in additional travel funds. Why do these new travel funds have a only a four month deadline?

Victimized by the tainted fund syndrome. The funds you used to partly pay expired in 4 months and tainted any new or other money used.

They take on the expiration of the original funds. If people could always get a 12-month extension by booking flights and then cancelling them, it would defeat the purpose of the expiration. Consequently, any money used with travel funds will ALSO take on the same expiration if the whole itinerary is cancelled. So $200 travel cert (EXP 8/31/17) + $100 cash, then cancelled, would result in a $300 travel cert (EXP 8/31/17).

Yes, you have to be really careful with this. Has been this way forever.

Best not to mix funds unless you are CERTAIN to travel.

Sometimes it makes sense to abandon small amounts.
