Resorts in the Florida Keys?

My wife and I are planning a January trip that will include a few nights in Key West. We are thinking of making the drive since neither of us has been through the Keys since we were children. Are there any luxury resorts between Miami and Key West?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Jeff

Do we like this place? We had a terrible time there - bad housekeeping, food, attitude. It pretends to be an Asian style retreat, but when it comes down to it, it is just tacky Florida in disguise.

I was disappointed with Little Palm also. The accomodation was good but service and food was decidedly 4 star.
I would be interested if anyone has any true luxury recommendations for the keys.

Unfortunately a true luxury resort in the Florida Keys does not exist.

I don't think there's much of anything in the luxury category in the Keys - and the Keys (especially Key West) aren't what they used to be - kind of quaint and funky (these days you'll be competing with a lot of cruise ship passengers). Nevertheless - it is an absolutely gorgeous drive down there (which can be done each way in a day) - and the drive alone is worth the trip IMO if you've never done it - or can't remember it.

Remember when you book in Key West that a lot of places that look (and probably are) nice are not especially welcoming to straight couples. Make sure what kind of place you're booking. Robyn

Although I wouldn't call it true luxury, try the Cheeca Lodge on Islamorada. It is certainly very nice.

As there appears to be a consensus that no true luxury resorts exist in the FL Keys, I am going to move this thread to the Florida Forum for further assistance and discussion.

Isn't that a bit of an over-generalisation? This has certainly not been my experience. In fact my impression has been that while there are gay couples in Key West than in many other places they are still vastly outnumbered by straight couples.

You are correct. But all I am saying is you should know the type of hotel you're booking. For example - this would not be a place for a straight man - a woman - or a straight couple: http://www.theinnkeeper.com/bnb/7411
