JAX sux
The reasons for this assessment are:
1. There is no elite line at security (other than something called "preferred passengers" which I believe is a third party program similar to Clear Pass. Full maze at 11:15a on Wennesday. 2. The layout of the erminal requires a MIA-type walk from security. 3. The condition of Terminal C is laughable. The ceiling height is less than 9 feet. That said, Terminal C is in the process of being replaced by the end of 2009. Your tax dollars at work. 4. The food options in Terminal C are limited to the Miller "brew pub" (?????) and Frankly Gourmet. 5. AA service is limited, and AA's gates are nearly as far from the parking lot as Savannah, GA. Avoid if you can, at least for the next 22 months. |
[QUOTE=diaspora04;9433211]The reasons for this assessment are:
Jax sux? If you think it does now, you should have been here... (a) For the old terminal. (b) Before a couple of bridges, back when during high traffic hours, travel from Atlantic Beach to the airport could actually be quicker via the Mayport Ferry. "as far as Savannah?" There are those who would with justification claim that some gates at the old ATL/Hartsfield (sp?) were actually a longer walk than Savannah. |
3. Why does a 9' ceiling height matter unless you are a person 9'1" or taller? Or a ladder smuggler, juggler, acrobat, or constantly practicing basketball player.
5. You mean the distance is as far as the distance from Jacksonville to Savannah GA? That's what you wrote and that's 116 air miles. Unless you meant as far from the parking lot to the gates as the Savannah GA airport's are. Maybe we can have a sticky of this airport sux. |

Regarding your second point, you will note the inclusion in my original post of the word "nearly." Consider, also, that I might be exaggerating for rhetorical effect (or attempting to do so). I successfully perceived your humor in your reference to ladder smuggling, but am at a loss how you failed to perceive mine. Is your last sentence intended to chill discussion, albeit nonflattering, of AA facilities or airports that AA serves? While this post does not merit a sticky, it might be helpful for an FTer considering whether to fly into JAX or use another airport and drive. |

While discussion is certainly to be encouraged here, I doubt many would avoid taking a trip somewhere, or inconvenience themselves on said trip, just because a particular airport was substandard. Most would, I think, accept it as a cost of the trip and deal with it. Your post, though, does help to set expectations so that people won't be too disappointed if they do fly to JAX. Always good to have expectation levels set appropriately.

While the line at security and long walk to the gate would not impact me as a connecting passenger, I'll be damned if I'm gonna connect at an airport with 9' ceilings. (Just to be clear, we're talking about the terminal ceilings, not the weather, right?)

I am surprised that I have to point out that 9' (more like 7'11" in the AA bullpen) is a very low ceiling for an airport or any type of public facility. Consider that Penn Station, which is not likely on anyone's shiny happy list, has more headroom.

Sorry for being dense but I seem to have missed the explanation as to why JAX needs more headroom than Penn Station.

This really belongs in another forum as the conditions at JAX are not specific to AA (or caused by AA).
While I agree that it is not the best airport I visited last year, I would like to commend both the AA staff who were quite helpful in processing my upgrades (and infant related stuff) and the car rental dropoff facility. I would agree that the concessions leave a lot to be desired. But this is true of most airports that haven't yet "got it." :( |

One nice attribut about JAX is the full spa. I have made it a point several times to arrive a couple of hours early in order to get a full body massage before my flight.
