various eateries in Outer Banks, NC
Pigman's Bar-B-Que
MP 9.5
Kill Devil Hills, NC

A great stop after checking out the Wright Brothers Monument. We are all going, on this 100th anniversary of the first flight. Right? Not the world's best BBQ but certainly good enough to please most diners. However, the Pigman TV commercials are world-class and you can spend hours watching them at the KDH location. The Duck location (at Wee Winks Square) is for carry-out only. In true Southern tradition, platters come with hush puppies, along with beans and coleslaw. The ribs are tender but everything is good. What can I say? Try the various sauces on the table. Don't forget to buy a Pigman shirt from the store. Gotta love the slogan of "Pork Me Pigman."
Goombay's
MM7 (beach road)
Kill Devil Hills, NC
Goombay's has the funny name and awesome food. The interior is made so that diners feel like they are underwater. The ceiling shows the bottom of a surfer, fish, other animals, and so on. The kids are fascinated with the aquarium on the entryway; it has a couple of albino frogs. The seafood taco platter is the dish I keep ordering. The fish is ground and a bit spicy. If you have no fear, make it spicier with the jalapenos. Other sides are fajita-like--cheese, tortillas, lettuce, sour cream. Gator bites is one appetizer that I just have not had a chance to try. Anyone? This is a very kid-friendly place with excellent food for all. Another place where you must get a t-shirt on the way out.

Mostly a Tex-Mex restaurant but they offer many seafood dishes (as do most Outer Banks restaurants). Half the people in my group chose the Southwestern Crab Dip and were not disappointed. We went for a Saturday lunch and there were three family groups and two couples in the place. They have separate dinner, lunch, and breakfast menus.
Crawford House Cafe

Most of the accommodations on the Outer Banks make people check out at 10 AM. Making the trek back to Northern Virginia takes 5 to 6 hours. We often stop to eat in Williamsburg or eat before leaving the Outer Banks, but the timing worked that we wanted a place in between. We found Crawford House along highway 168 just before getting to the Virginia border. It is a very nice looking place and clean on the inside. They served mostly traditional Southern dishes. Most of the diners were locals getting out of church. Always a great sign when the locals eat there. The Sunday lunch special during our visit was chicken liver. We tried fried chicken, mac & cheese, meat loaf. All were excellent. Platters come with fried okra as a choice, which I am happy to say was good. Traditional sides (green beans, rice, potatoes) are offered, also.
