The city center (Las Olas Street/Blvd) is not far from the airport.
The best things to see are near the water: Intra-coastal Waterway and may be the beach area. I remember only one place direct on the Intra-coastal Waterway, it's called Shooter's or so. But there must be more, others near Las Olas.

One of the nicest spots in SE Florida, especially if you are not attracted by crowds and glitz, is the Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge, which is about a half-hour north of FLL (just off Florida's Tpk). There are lots of paths and boardwalk areas (through swamps) to explore and enjoy the wildlife and flora -- really a pleasant spot to get away from the endless chain restaurants, gated communities, and general vulgarity of the 'Gold Coast.'

You're about 20 minutes (by cab) from the Fort Lauderdale beaches (up US-1, then across 17th Street), so if you have time, and want to stroll along the beaches area, that may be an idea. Cabs aren't inexpensive though, so be advised.
Also, give yourself plenty of time for check-in for your flight at FLL. We were there 2 weeks ago, for a family visit, and the line-ups to go through the scanners were very long for midday flights at T-4, probably longer at the other, larger terminals. Expect a 35-40 minute line-up to get to the scanners (minimum) if you are traveling at a busy time of day--and be prepared to remove your shoes for x-raying--they were making everyone do so.
