Recommendations for Outer Banks
Any tips on parts of OBX to stay in/near or avoid? I haven't been there, but am told that some areas are tremendously overdeveloped.

My wife wants to go to the OB in late June - July. We haven't taken a driving vacation in years. 
We're driving down from the NY suburbs.
What towns would you recommend? Is there enough to keep us busy for 4, 5, 6 or 7 days?
Can you offer any advice?
