MIA to Islamorada-where to stay?

Husband and I are scheduled to leave on a trip with friends out of MIA on an upcoming Monday afternoon (we all meet at the airport for car service to their boat). It is quite a challenge for us to get away without the kiddos and the grandparents have offered to come a couple of days early so we can travel MSY-MIA on the preceding Saturday morning. We have spent some time in South Beach which was fun to see but as 50-somethings who like quiet and relaxation it wasn't really our thing.

We are contemplating getting to MIA as early as possible on Saturday, renting a car in MIA and driving to Islamorada. Maybe Cheeca Lodge or Casa Morada? I have read a few threads about the traffic, etc., however, and am wondering if we are going to spend most of our time in the car? We would arrive MIA mid-morning and have to be back at MIA Monday at 3pm. What do those of you who have experience in south FLA think? Are we better off staying somewhere not so far away? Any thoughts on what might be a suitable alternative for a couple vaca? We like yoga, biking, a nice pool and to have options other than a hotel restaurant (walking distance is preferable). It's a short trip so we don't need lots of activities-just a low key get away.
