Tarpon fishing
Hey Flyertalk,
I've done mangrove and near shore fishing trips while in Florida a number of times and have had a blast.
However I've never done any tarpon fishing, something I've always wanted to do.
Anyone have tips/ideas? Where did you go out of?
Thanks in advance

I am in Florida now and will go for the tarpon Thursday out of Everglades City. It is 1/2 the hour south of Naples area, off Highway 29.
I have been from there before, and the mangrove style fishing you mention is the very best in that area.
I believe Floridian calling it "The land of 10,000 Islands."
If you going sometime, I would recommend it.

If you can get ahold of a Florida Sportsman magazine, they have region by region fishing reports and recommendations. They have a website as well, although I've never been there. I had a subscription long before moving to Florida and found it useful because I didn't have to wait for a particular season, I could see what was hot where and when I wanted to visit. I think tarpon are available up and down the gulf coast, we have some here in Panama City, but I always thought the Tampa area, plus or minus 50 miles, was a hotspot.

Check, that's the checkmark sound next to the box marked "Tarpon Fishing" on my bucket list.
I went this past weekend with fellow Flyertalker Ceres. We utilized the services of Captain Matt out of Anna Maria Island https://www.captainmatt.com/ We were very pleased with his skill.
I hooked my first tarpon about 30 minutes into the trip. Approx 120lb fish, took me over an hour to land it, WHAT A FIGHT !!! I'm sore as hell from the effort :-)
I hooked 3 others and had brief fights but the line broke all three times, Capt Matt said he's never experienced that before.
Had a blast, recommend you try it if you are into fishing at all.
