Why does Sept = low hotel & flight prices in MIA?
We (my hubby & and me) are considering a Sept. 26-30, 2016 Bahamas cruise, and would be flying non-stop DTW to MIA on Delta. It is too early to book our hotel (Marriott Miami Biscayne Bay) and flight, so we were did dummy bookings for this September in order to estimate future costs as well as compare to what we paid for our first cruise this May. What a difference , but I have to wonder: are the low Miami hotel and flight prices due to something special this September? Or is September considered off-season?

My guess would be off-season. Schools start either in late August or early September. Plus any vacationers there might be, could be waiting until October or later to take advantage of the fall cool down so it won't be quite as hot/humid. Basically, there probably will be very little "vacation" travel in late September.

September has always been the very best of months for hotel deals in Florida. Why ? Because it is the peak of hurricane season but yet (1) the kids are back in school so the summer crowd is not there and (2) the "got to get out of the cold crowd" from up north has not yet resumed. This has always been.
As a Floridian who enjoys traveling to our many different resorts about the state it has always been the best time for deals!

September is actually off-season for a lot of places, especially after Labor Day. But hurricane season can be a significant deterrent for southeastern beach destinations, especially if the traveler has to book non-refundable flights.

August is the peak of Hurricane Season, not September as per the National Hurricane Center, see http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/data/#monthly

August is the peak of Hurricane Season, not September as per the National Hurricane Center, see http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/data/#monthly
"On average, about 80 percent of tropical activity occurs during August, September and October. The U.S. coastline has been struck most often in September with 74 hurricane hits since 1900, compared with 52 in August and 31 in October.
Yet South Florida is most vulnerable during October, as that's when storms are more likely to develop in the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico, and both are close to this area.
Consider that 19 hurricanes have struck this region in October, compared with 15 in September and 11 in August since tropical records started in 1851. Among the October systems: Hurricane Wilma in 2005, Hurricane Irene in 1999, Hurricane Isbell in 1964 and Hurricane King in 1950."
