Construction around FLL

We just booked a cruise and have been reading horror stories about shuttles from hotels taking forever, taxis costing megabucks because of the time delays involved, just in general a nightmare for transportation around the area.

What is fact and what is fiction? If we needed to take a taxi from the airport to a hotel on Griffin Road, then to the Port everglades the next day (a Sunday), what is the real scoop?

use google maps for three or four four Sundays prior to your visit to Fort Lauderdale around the time of day you intend to traverse from your hotel to the port. If you plot out your route, it will give you real time estimates of arrival and the traffic patterns on sundays. After 3 or 4 Sundays of doing this, you should have a good idea of how traffic delays are specifically for the route you will be taking. Another suggestion, would be to call the front desk reps on several Sundays prior to your visit and pretend to be staying in their hotel and asking them for a estimated time of arrival. They are getting daily direct feedback from their shuttle drivers and will want to be accurate if they think you are staying with them. I live here, if I was doing the drive I would give myself an hour and just relax at dockside upon arrival and not care abut the traffic. Bring a book, people-watch; enjoy our superb weather or walk to nearby shopping and while away the minutes before I am ready to face the ship's humongous check-in lines.

(If too late for the OP, then for future travelers):

As you may know, there are actually TWO separate, major construction projects going on: the southern runway project and the port Everglades entrance (Eller Drive) project. The first is what is impacting Griffin Road hotels, the second affects access to the Port.

If using cabs instead of hotel shuttles, instruct the driver to stay off of US 1 and to use the NORTH Perimeter Road. This allows access to the hotels via the "back door" of Ravenswod Blvd, which bypasses the construction.

Going from hotel to Port Everglades, instruct the driver to use either the Stare Road 84 port entrance or the Convention Center port entrance. As above, you miss much of the area impacted by the two big construction projects.
