Purchasing duty free

Are you allowed to carry out your purchases at the duty free shop or do we need rely on them to make sure our purchases meet our outgoing flight?

Since no American airports have an international transit area, you always have to pick up your duty free at the gate in the US. They don't want you to buy someone tax-free and then hand it to a domestic passenger.

My experience with DF is that it is the passengers that forget to collect it from the jet way (leading to announcements from the cabin crew) than the DF store staff forgetting to deliver it.
