A group of us are planning on a trip either to the Florida Keys or a river cruise in Europe.If we decide on the Keys, what is the best way to see this area? Is it best to start at the top and drive to Key West and enjoy all in between? or just fly into Key West and enjoy that area?

I'll cast the first ballot for just Key West - I found the drive down quite forgettable - unless being stuck behind grandma Moses or gumby and pokey for miles is your idea of fun

If you guys like to snorkel there is a really good spot to do it off of Key Largo. You have to weight the costs of flying into MIA or FLL and renting a car vs flying into Key West and not renting a car.

That depends on your personality. Do you like slow drives and seeing a lot of bridges? Each Key has a slightly different personality and it is nice to get off and explore each one. If you are in a hurry and don't care for driving over long bridges then flying in is best.

The drive from MIA to the first key, Key Largo, is boring as all hell. Beyond that for the remainder of the trip to Key West, is like driving along a string of pearls with aqua blue water on both sides. Travel through lots of smaller towns like Islamorada and Marathon, places back in time to old Florida of the 1950s. I make the trip once year from my home in Naples for the last 28 years and enjoy it as much as ever.

I absolutely loved driving from Miami to Key West, getting out and exploring each key. Took us a day, but well worth it (you can do it in much less time)..

Remeber Key West is a small town. You can see everthing there is to see in two days. The remainder of your time would likely be rest and relaxation. Unless you're looking for plenty of leisure time, a week in KW may be to much.
I am assuming a European river cruise would be a week long and three or four day to get there and back.

I vote for the drive. There are a ton of things to do.

Flying:
Flights into Key West are typically far more expensive than flying into Miami or Fort Lauderdale. The drive from Miami is about 3.5 hours and 4 from Fort Lauderdale. It is a very scenic drive.
Since the runway is so short at Key West, there are typically baggage & weight restrictions that may or may not impact you. Each airline differs slightly. Check before you ticket.

If you drive, there are two ways to get into the keys at Key Largo, US1 or Card Sound Key. US1 is shorter, but more heavily travelled, so could be slower as it is a two lane road. The drive through the keys has some amazing views, including the 7 mile bridge. They typically use Mile Markers (MM) for directions rather than addresses.

Been many, many years since I lived in S. Fla. and used to go fishing frequently in the Keys, as far south as Marathon. Anyone know if some of the restaurants we used to stop at on the way home are still there, and under the same names:

Green Turtle Inn in Key Largo; Harbor Island Seafood at the first bridge southbound entering Islamoroda; and a "shack", appropriatley named "The Shack" which was a small old building on the right side of US 1 southbound somewhere around Islamorada, where the owner was the chef, and had the day's menu written on a blackboard as you entered. He took your orders, prepared the freshly caught meals himself, then served them to you. Only about a half dozen tables, not very fancy, but the food was delicious!

Definately drive down there if you have the time, rather then fly. And enjoy the sights, small beaches along the way, super snorkling and fishing (if you've time for either) and some iconic old style (50's and 60's) sights along the way.

If you do the Keys def visit Dry Tortugas, 70 miles off key west, you can get their by ferry or sea plane

I vote the river cruise. Driving down a good part of the keys, it's suburbia and strip malls. Nothing nice. It's nice the last 1/3-1/2. Key West is getting way overdeveloped. Went there in 1990 and 1991 , and then back in 2000. Couldn't believe the change. Duval was charming (still) in 1990/91 but by 2000 is full of chain outlets and the few odd shops selling geegaws. Too many cruise ships too (they weren't there in the early '90s). Tennessee Williams thought it was ruined in the '50s.

There was this awesome seafood shack, with tons of license plates plastered on the walls, a bit of a dive but breezy and low-key. Luffed it!

I did the drive last week for the first time. My only suggestion is do not do it in the dark especilly the first leg from Miami where it is all water and one lane. It goes to 2 lanes every now and then to allow passing slower traffic. The second half of the drive is much better but still would do it in daylight.

Agreed. Stopped for dinner on one key, and it started thundering and pouring rain right when we came out and headed to the campsite. It was still daylight, but when the clouds came and we were driving on a skinny bridge, the sky and the water FLIPPED and what was a bright sky was dark and the water became bright blue...suspended between heaven and earth ayeeee!
