Why join Skyteam?

Why join Skyteam?
Could someone explain the advantage of joining ST? Flying mostly NW bot occassionally (recently) have had to fly CO & DL because of destinations. On CO I'm generally not getting segments unless on Y fare and only get 50% EQM. Next trip I'll make SE on NW bot I have 60,00 Banked miles on DL.

So the more appropriate question is why do airlines join Skyteam or any other alliance like Oneworld and Star?
