this is really interesting. maybe it will create some healthy pricing pressure on the n.america to africa routings through europe.

i remember when air afrique used to fly the jfk--dkr route in the pre-bankruptcy days... sure saved a lot of time.

I have a Pan Am "Jet Clipper Route Maps" folder from 1970 showing flights to Rabat, Dakar, Monrovia, Abidjan, Accra, Cotonou, Kinshasa, Johannesburg, Dar es Salaam, Nairobi and Entebbe. The 1972 version, "Pan Am's World Routes," also shows Lagos, Douala and Libreville and replaces Rabat with Casablanca. Neither shows Cairo, but that was traded to TWA for rights in northern Europe, wasn't it?

I have a map with no date but is clearly from the 60s. PanAm had service to Johannesburg via Dakar, Lagos and Leopoldville (now Kinshasa). All 707 service AFAIK.

Out of the major American passenger carriers, most certainly yes.

That said, I don't look forward to flying DL to South Africa -- especially given DL's biz cabin; however, this could make for some very interesting convoluted award routings with stopovers en-route.
